You read that right. This patient had a droopy left eyelid at baseline causing an uneven appearance of her eyes. With a little neuromodulator strategically placed, I was able to open her left eye and bring back some symmetry. Her glabella, crows feet and forehead were also treated. Match Day 2008
A few days before the actual Match, you get a call letting you know IF you matched (not where). I was crossing the main hospital entrance street when my phone rang. I stopped in the middle of oncoming Miami traffic awaiting my fate. I matched. I started screaming like a lunatic and immediately called my dad. On actual Match day, at UM they pick names randomly out of a bowl and call you up to the stage so you can open your envelope in front of the entire class and read out where you matched. Does this still happen?! I was second to last of the entire class. My mom ran up on the stage behind me to stand by me in excitement. I matched in NYC St Luke's/Roosevelt for intern year and UMiami/Jackson for dermatology. After 8 years of post high school education (4 college, 4 medical school), I had a clear path to what I wanted to be. I had prepared as back up a research opportunity in the field of dermatology in case I did not match. My dermatology mentor told me: getting a dermatology residency is like winning the lottery. To me that has meant showing up to work happy and truly enjoying what I do. I tell all aspiring physicians the following: don't become a doctor for any other reason than knowing deeply that is what you want to be. It is a long and torturous road. You forego making a living for YEARS while your friends are likely climbing their ladders. But if it's what you want, do it and don't look back. And do everything you can to get there. I would do it again every time. 👩🏻‍⚕️ Right before match day I had also just started dating my now husband. We dated long distance for my intern year, but obstacles weren't knew to me. In many life things, when you know, you know.
