OVERVIEW:
What to Do When You Have a Tricky, Sticky, Picky Brain is an engaging and comprehensive resource for children and teens to understand and effectively manage Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). It translates the gold-standard treatment—Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)—into clear, practical strategies tailored for children and teens with OCD, while also incorporating the latest advances in research and clinical practice.

KEY STRENGTHS:
Evidence-Based and Up-to-Date – Grounded in CBT with ERP, and enhanced by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) principles, inhibitory learning, and motivational interviewing to strengthen engagement, sustain motivation, and improve long-term outcomes.

Understanding OCD – Offers clear psychoeducation about what OCD is, how it operates, common doubts and barriers that often come up, and “tricks” that OCD uses to maintain control—helping readers gain insight and learn how to challenge symptoms effectively.

Comprehensive Scope – Addresses both common and often-overlooked presentations of OCD, including scrupulosity, disgust, intrusive thoughts related to harm or sexual content, emotional contamination, existential OCD, mental compulsions, PANS/PANDAS, and so much more. The hope is that all kids with OCD will see themselves reflected in the material, which will normalize symptoms and reduce shame and stigma.

Perspectives from Real Kids with OCD – Uniquely features personal accounts of six youth with OCD (ages 10-17) to enhance relatability to youth, reduce stigma, and help them feel comfortable discussing personal topics.

EXTRA SUPPORT FOR LIFE WITH OCD:
Communication and Support – Offers practical advice on talking about OCD with parents, teachers, and peers; seeking support; setting goals; and making thoughtful decisions about self-disclosure.

Resilience and Relapse Prevention – Strategies for maintaining progress and protecting against relapse, equipping readers with tools for ongoing resilience.

BOTTOM LINE:
What to Do When You Have a Tricky, Sticky, Picky Brain is a thorough and empowering resource to help children and teens understand OCD, apply treatment strategies, and regain control over their lives—while also serving as an invaluable tool for parents, clinicians, and educators. At over 200 pages, with an extensive and detailed review of symptoms, and discussions of many of the nuances that often arise with OCD, it has incredible breadth and depth that will make it a go-to resource for treatment of pediatric OCD!
