Decoding Pilates: What Are You Really Being Taught?

Here in South Florida, we see all kinds of Pilates marketing:
💬 “Pilates redefined.”
💬 “Tradition meets innovation!”
💬 “Classically trained, contemporary approach.”

Let’s clear things up: Classical and contemporary Pilates are not the same—and they’re not meant to be mixed.

Classical Pilates (also known as traditional Pilates or Contrology) is a whole method. It follows a specific order, uses distinct apparatus, and carries a clear intent—all created by Joseph Pilates to work together as a system.

When that structure is altered, the apparatus is modified, or the principles are reinterpreted, it’s no longer classical Pilates. That’s not necessarily wrong—but it should be called what it is: contemporary Pilates.

Understanding the difference helps you make more informed choices about your practice and your teacher.

Each of them brings a wealth of expertise and a diverse range of certifications to our team. Here are a few highlights about their impressive backgrounds:

Drew is a classical violinist and holds certifications in Pilates, Gyrotonic, and Yamuna Bodyrolling.
Crystal is diligently pursuing a BS in Exercise Physiology with a focus on physical therapy and is certified in Yoga, Barre, and classical Pilates.
Taylor has an MFA in Dance and has made notable contributions to the field, including performing with Shakira at the 2020 Super Bowl.
Yumei, originally from China, is a licensed Massage Therapist with a special interest in teaching Pilates to seniors.
