When my patient texted me last night and said “Lauri I threw up and I think I have the stomach flu”, I immediately asked her to check urine for ketones. She did not have the stomach flu, she was going into DKA. Thankfully she went to the ED, received IV fluids and was fine. Please 🙏 know the Symptoms of DKA (Diabetic Ketoacidosis)

DKA is a serious, life-threatening complication of diabetes that needs urgent attention.
Don’t ignore the signs!

⚠️ Common Symptoms:
• High blood sugar that doesn’t come down
• Nausea or vomiting
• Stomach pain
• Deep, rapid breathing
• Fruity or sweet breath odor
• Extreme thirst or dry mouth
• Frequent urination
• Fatigue or confusion

If you notice these symptoms—check for ketones and seek medical care immediately.
