Ketones, the ketogenic diet, ketosis. ALL are used interchangeably.
But should they be used this way????
The problem I see with this is the idea that “going Keto” implies that you are eating very high fat.
However, as science advances, we are learning, so much more about what ketones are.
What do ketones do, how are ketones made, and what are the differences between the three different forms of ketones your body produces?
In my latest podcast, I introduce Jim Howard CEO at Readout Health The Maker of Biosense.
Biosense is a handheld device that measures your breath ketones, also known as “ACES” (short for acetone).
Which begs the question: Testing Ketones With Breath Or Blood: Which is a Better Tool?
The great thing about measuring your aces is the fact that first, it is obviously easier to not have to pinprick your fingers multiple times per day. For that reason, it is more cost-effective.
The cool thing about aces is Jim and his biosense team has intentionally “gamified” the tracking of ketones. Whereby different levels of ACES equals different therapeutic effects:
1-4 ACES: Still burning glucose as the primary fuel
5+ACES: Burning fat for fuel. Lowering blood sugar. Decreasing belly fat. Reducing blood pressure. Improving lipid profiles.
10+ ACES: Increasing mental clarity. Easing inflammation. Enhancing brain health.
15+ ACES: Regenerating cells. Enhancing health and energy.
But here’s the thing, slowly going up the ACE’s ladder isn’t necessarily based on eating super high fats. Movement, decreased inflammation, lower carbs, and higher fats, are all strategies that will help you ascend your ACES number.
