This is Rich and Tim, and their story is a powerful reminder of what true friendship looks like.❤️

Rich's world changed in 2014 with a lupus diagnosis that caused his kidneys to fail. He was on dialysis, facing the reality that a life-saving transplant could be years away - but thanks to a calling his friend felt during a church service, that wait was cut short. On January 2020, Tim selflessly gave Rich a second chance at life by donating his kidney. What was expected to take years, happened in just five months!

As Rich approaches six years post-transplant, he is filled with gratitude for his life, his health and the incredible people who have supported him. “If you’re reading this, you’re blessed—just being alive is a gift!” he shared.

It's official! University Health has once again achieved the highest recognition in nursing excellence: Magnet status! 🎉

We’ve earned the prestigious Magnet designation from the ANCC - American Nurses Credentialing Center for the fourth time in a row. This is the gold standard in patient care and it means our nurses consistently provide the best work environment for each other and the best outcomes for our patients.

We are officially:
🌟 The only hospital in San Antonio to achieve Magnet status four times!
🌟 One of only 2% of hospitals nationwide to achieve this four times!

Senior Vice President, Chief Nurse Executive Dina Pérez-Graham said it best: "What resonated most was the genuine heartfelt connection you each have for your work... It was simply who we are. Magnet really showcases not only the excellent quality our nurses provide but also their professionalism, compassion and kindness. We are so very proud of our entire team.”

Thank you to every single nurse and team member who made this recognition possible. We are so proud!

We’re thrilled to announce the opening of the Limb Salvage Clinic at the Texas Diabetes Institute. It’s a center dedicated to saving limbs and changing lives for people living with diabetes. 💙

Led by Dr. Anand Prasad, this clinic brings together a team of expert interventional cardiologists and podiatric specialists to tackle the root causes of limb loss, including poor circulation, blocked arteries and chronic wounds.

In San Antonio, called the “diabetic foot capital of the world” by podiatrist Dr. Michael Sobolevsky, this clinic is more than a medical facility. It’s a mission.

Our team takes a whole-person approach, focusing on restoring blood flow, treating neuropathy and helping patients regain mobility for a better quality of life.

When you save a limb, you save a family. We’re excited to share more about the lives we’re impacting and the services we offer. This is one more way we’re proudly living our mission to improve the health of our San Antonio community and beyond.

Stay tuned for inspiring stories and updates! 🌟

Yesterday, our Injury Prevention team teamed up with Brooke Army Medical Center, STRAC and other community partners to host the VERY FIRST F.A.L.L. Fest Resource Fair — a free event to help adults and caregivers learn how to prevent falls.

Did you know falls are one of the leading causes of injury and death for adults over 65? Unfortunately, those numbers have been rising over the past 20 years. But the great news is that falls are preventable!

At the event, we shared tips on medication management, home safety and other simple changes that can keep you and your loved ones safe and independent. ❤️

“As a common cause of trauma injuries, falls can be life-changing, especially for older adults,” said Jennifer Northway, Director of Injury Prevention at University Health. “Simple changes can make a big difference.”

Thank you to everyone who joined us and took steps toward a safer season! Visit our website to learn more about fall prevention: https://ow.ly/goB550X1PrY.

Born five weeks premature and with severe kidney disease, Oshae's young life was defined by nightly dialysis and hospital stays. But on October 2024, everything changed. His incredible mom, Valine, gave him a life-saving gift at our University Health Transplant Institute: one of her kidneys. ❤️

Today, four-year-old Oshae is a “brand-new kid, full of energy and growing taller every day.” He is finally experiencing the simple joys he once missed, like playing outdoors and traveling with his family. Inspired by her son's amazing journey, Valine is now looking to give a second chance at life to another child by becoming a liver donor.

Their story is a beautiful reminder of the power of hope and giving back. Join us in celebrating Oshae’s new chance at life, Valine's selfless love and the incredible impact of living donation.

In the latest issue of Medicine Magazine from the Bexar County Medical Society, Dr. Ildiko Agoston talks about launching University Health’s new Women’s Heart Clinic. Dr. Kit Powers and Dr. David Bush discuss new developments in diagnosing and treating heart conditions.

What would you say to the person whose decision to donate part of their liver saved the life of you or your spouse? Two couples recently found their tears of gratitude said more than words when they met during a celebration of our University Health Transplant Institute’s living liver donors. 💙💚

When Santiago Robles wasn’t a match for fiancé Elena Perez, he agreed to give to an unknown person in exchange for Elena receiving her transplant. It was the same for Alejandra Restrepo who offered to donate for her husband, Luis Arrieta Mendez. In the end, Alejandra was a match for Elena, and Santiago was compatible with Luis. All four are hoping their love and trust help to spread the important message: living organ donors can make miracles happen. They recover quickly and their gift gives others a chance to live a full life.

For years, Victorino Valdez Herrera, 74, lived with the daily fatigue and shortness of breath that came with atrial fibrillation, known as AFib. His irregular heart rhythm placed him at higher risk for stroke and heart failure.

After multiple procedures failed to bring relief, Mr. Valdez placed his trust in our cardiologists, Dr. Dawn Hui and Dr. Hemal Nayak. They have teamed up to use the Convergent procedure for patients that have AFib that doesn’t respond to other treatments. The two-step, minimally invasive process combines surgical and catheter-based techniques.

The result: Mr. Valdez’s AFib symptoms are gone. Today he is back to enjoying long walks and family activities. He’s an example of how teamwork and advanced medical care is helping us change lives. 💙

Univision San Antonio broadcast a compelling Spanish-language story that tells of Mr. Valdez’s journey and explains the procedure: https://ow.ly/MY5Q50WNEq6.
