Bogalusa Heart Study

Bogalusa Heart Study Established in 1973, the Bogalusa Heart Study is the longest and most detailed study of a biracial (black-white) population of children in the world.

The focus was on understanding the early natural history of coronary artery disease and essential hypertension. In Spring of 2012, HBO released a four-part documentary “The Weight of the Nation” in which the study was featured in Part One “Consequences”. In the fall of 2012 funding was received for four separate studies which will evaluate the effects of DNA modifications and fetal growth, second-

hand smoke exposure, cognitive and physical function with aging and the relationship between pre-pregnancy and birth outcomes on cardiovascular disease risk.

Our team recently attended the International Childhood Cardiovascular Cohorts (i3C). We connected with other researchers who study the origins of heart disease from Finland, Australia, Colorado, and Ohio. We hope that by working with other studies to learn about how childhood factors influence later life disease, we can do more to prevent heart disease in the children and grandchildren of our original participants. We were accompanied by several BHS team members, including Ms. Judy, who works at the clinic and has been a participant in the study since she was a young girl, Robin Romback, Clinical Research Coordinator; Vanessa Fonseca, our Clinical Protocol Technician; and Shirine Moukaled, a PhD student working with us.

At the Bogalusa Heart Study, we’re exploring how new technologies can help us better understand brain health as we age. Using digital tools like tablet-based tasks, our team is gaining insight into how the brain processes information — quickly, easily, and non-invasively. We recently shared some of this exciting work at a scientific conference, highlighting how much we’re learning thanks to the continued dedication of our participants. Your involvement makes this research possible — thank you!

Last month, our team attended the Steve Gleason's Game Changer Gala, which helps raise critical research funds for ALS brain disease. We were honored to attend with our collaborators from Boston University and Robert W. Turner II, a former NFL player who has spent the most recent part of his career focusing on research impacting men's brain health. Dr. Robert Turner is a former NFL player, and his career changed to focus on research impacting men's brain health.
