Boise’s Active Lifestyle & Orthopedic Health

Boise is known for its active lifestyle—hiking, biking, climbing, skiing, and year-round outdoor recreation.

With all that activity, injuries to the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand are common.
Pain that lingers, weakness during movement, or difficulty with everyday tasks like lifting or gripping can signal an underlying orthopedic issue.

Ignoring symptoms often leads to longer recovery times and more complicated problems later.

If you’re experiencing persistent pain or limited function, an orthopedic specialist can help evaluate what’s going on.

Your mobility matters—don’t let injuries keep you from the activities you enjoy.

Spring Sports Safety

As Boise heads into spring, many people are getting back to the activities they love—golf, tennis, pickleball, gardening, and weekend recreation.

But early-season activity can sometimes lead to injuries when the body hasn’t fully adjusted after winter.

If you start noticing pain in your shoulder, elbow, wrist, or hand, don’t ignore it. Being a “little hurt” can quickly become “a lot hurt” if underlying issues go unchecked.

An orthopedic evaluation can help identify problems early before they become more serious.

Stay active this spring—but listen to your body.

Early Signs of Rotator Cuff Pain

Shoulder pain often begins gradually—and many patients ignore the early warning signs.

The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that stabilize the shoulder joint. When these tissues become irritated or injured, simple movements can become uncomfortable.

Early symptoms may include:
• Shoulder pain when reaching overhead
• Difficulty lifting objects
• Weakness in the arm
• Pain when sleeping on one side
• Clicking or catching sensations in the shoulder

Many people assume these symptoms are simply part of aging or overuse. But persistent shoulder discomfort should be evaluated to rule out rotator cuff injuries.

If shoulder pain is interfering with your daily activities, it may be time to consult an orthopedic specialist.

Elbow Tendonitis vs. Tennis Elbow

Elbow pain can show up during everyday activities—lifting, gripping tools, working on the computer, or playing sports. But not all elbow pain is the same.

Two of the most common conditions we see are elbow tendonitis and tennis elbow. While both involve inflammation of tendons around the elbow, they affect different areas and often develop from repetitive motions.

Common signs patients notice include:
• Pain when gripping or lifting
• Tenderness around the elbow joint
• Weakness in the forearm
• Discomfort during repetitive activities

Many Boise patients assume elbow pain will simply go away with time, but persistent pain may signal a tendon injury that should be evaluated by an orthopedic specialist.

Understanding the difference between these conditions can help you know when it’s time to seek professional evaluation.

Winter Sports & Orthopedic Injuries: When Is It More Than Just Soreness?

Winter in Idaho means skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, hockey, and time on the mountain. While soreness after a long day at Bogus Basin is common, certain symptoms may signal a more serious orthopedic injury.

You may need a specialist evaluation if you experience:

• Persistent pain that doesn’t improve after a few days
• Swelling or bruising around a joint
• A popping sensation at the time of injury
• Limited range of motion in the shoulder, knee, wrist, or elbow
• Instability — feeling like a joint may “give out”
• Numbness, tingling, or weakness after a fall

Common winter sports injuries often affect the shoulder (dislocations or rotator cuff injuries), wrist (fractures from falls), knee (ligament injuries), and elbow. What feels like a “sprain” can sometimes be more significant, especially if movement becomes restricted or pain interferes with sleep, work, or daily activities.

If your injury isn’t improving or you’re unsure how serious it is, getting an orthopedic evaluation provides clarity and peace of mind — so you can make informed decisions about your next steps.

Is It Elbow Arthritis? Here’s How to Know.

Elbow arthritis can develop gradually, making it easy to dismiss early symptoms as simple soreness or overuse. But when discomfort becomes persistent or begins limiting motion, it may be more than a temporary issue.

You may want to see a specialist if you’re experiencing:

• Persistent elbow pain that doesn’t improve with rest
• Stiffness or difficulty fully bending or straightening your arm
• A grinding, popping, or crunching sensation with movement
• Swelling around the joint
• Decreasing strength or function that affects work, lifting, or daily tasks

Arthritis in the elbow can interfere with routine movements like reaching, carrying groceries, turning a doorknob, or pushing up from a chair. If your elbow feels increasingly stiff, painful, or unstable — especially if symptoms are progressing — it’s important to have it properly evaluated.

Getting an expert assessment can help determine what’s causing your symptoms and whether specialized orthopedic care is needed.

Do You Have Trigger Finger? Here’s How to Tell.

Trigger finger (also called stenosing tenosynovitis) happens when a finger gets stuck in a bent position and may suddenly “snap” straight. It can start subtly — but over time, the symptoms become hard to ignore.

You may need to see a specialist if you notice:

• A finger that catches, clicks, or locks when you bend or straighten it
• Stiffness, especially first thing in the morning
• A tender bump or soreness at the base of the finger or thumb
• Pain that worsens with gripping, typing, or repetitive hand use
• A finger that becomes stuck and needs your other hand to straighten it

While occasional stiffness can happen to anyone, persistent locking, pain, or loss of smooth motion is not normal. If your finger interferes with work, hobbies, sleep, or daily activities, it’s time to have it evaluated by a hand specialist.

Early evaluation provides clarity, reassurance, and an accurate diagnosis — especially if symptoms are progressing.
