Running season is in full swing and races abound from 5k to ultramarathons. Dr. Corey Dupont, PT, DPT is a runner with a PT career that has specialized in treating and training runners. If your form looks like the runner in the photo, or you think that's what you should look like when running, you have been the victim of marketing schemes. Spring has sprung and the sun is out! Like bears coming out of hibernation, this is the time of year where we see people taking advantage of the nicer weather to spend more time outdoors and becoming more active. Whether you're a weekend warrior in the backyard or are excited to play hard in the Boise Foothills, this sudden burst of increased activity can place you at risk for certain common injuries.

For those with plans to tackle the landscaping around the house, I often see back and shoulder injuries from lifting heavy wheelbarrows, shoveling, or simply yanking on the mower pull start string 20 times trying to bring it back to life. Why Pay Cash for Physical Therapy?

In a word, Freedom! I believe in freedom of choice and the right to determine your care on your terms. By paying cash for physical therapy (PT), you are placed in control of your rehab with a lot less confusion.

Third party insurances are increasingly placing greater restrictions on PT, let alone being incredibly confusing when considering deductibles, co-insurances or co-pays, authorizations, billing units, visit limits, exclusions, etc. PT's are also forced into seeing multiple patients per hour to make it worth while due to the ever decreasing reimbursements, which only translates to less time you get to spend with your PT.

"But, I have insurance, wouldn't it be cheaper to use that?" you ask. Not necessarily. I've been seeing and you've been experiencing increasing premiums, deductibles, co-insurances or co-pays. Depending on your plan, it may actually be cheaper to pay cash. See the infographic I have created for different scenarios. Factor in the time and effort you take to go to a clinic through your insurance, you'll be spending much more time and therefore money.

Paying cash for PT, doesn't completely eliminate your insurance benefits. Most plans allow you to submit receipts from "Out Of Network" (OON) providers to be applied to your OON benefits or to be reimbursed all together.

Take control of your care and choose cash-based PT.
