For many neurodivergent adults, not starting a task isn’t about laziness or avoidance. It’s more like standing in front of a door that won’t open, you can see what needs to be done, you want to do it, but the handle won’t turn.
Starting a task often requires crossing a higher internal activation threshold. Pressure and “just start” advice usually make that threshold harder to cross. What helps is lowering the barrier: redefining starting as opening the document, touching the laundry basket, or reading the first line.
Small entry points, supportive cues, and shared momentum can replace the spark when it isn’t firing on its own. Understanding this shift can completely change how we support neurodivergent young adults.
