The St. Luke’s McCall Auxiliary awarded its community grants to five local nonprofits, for a total of $60,000 at the group's general membership meeting on Jan. 12.

The Auxiliary’s community grant program is funded entirely by proceeds from the St. Luke's McCall Auxiliary Thrift Shop.

“It is a gratifying time of year for the Auxiliary and for those who work tirelessly at the Thrift Shop to be able to continue supporting programs that work to improve the health and wellness of our community members," Auxiliary grant committee chair Holly Thrash said.

“We are grateful to the community for donating their used items to the Thrift Shop. The amount of donations the volunteers process through the Thrift Shop is truly amazing.”

• $20,000: St. Luke’s McCall Complex Care/Compassion Fund, supports individuals with financial hardships due to serious illness.

• $13,500: The Community Medical Fund, helps adults in need of medical, behavioral health, dental and vision care and medications.

• $11,000: St. Luke’s McCall Dental – Brighter Smiles program, supports those 18 and older in need of dental care who would not be able to afford it otherwise.

• $10,000: The Community Children’s Medical Fund, helps families with children in need of medical, behavioral health, vision and dental care.

• $5,500: Adams County Patient Assistant Fund, provides financial support for under and uninsured individuals.

In a way, it looks so futuristic. And sometimes, the results make it feel otherworldly.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy allows patients to breathe medical-grade oxygen while inside a pressurized chamber. The higher pressure forces more oxygen into the bloodstream, dissolves it into plasma and carries it to areas starved of oxygen.

It didn’t take long for St. Luke’s safety director Steve Richardson to become a believer after it became part of the care options at St. Luke’s more than 20 years ago.

“When we first started it was new for the hospital,” Richardson said. “We had only been open for about a year when we got an after-hours crush injury. He was an 18- to 19-year-old … and he was out working and a 2,000-pound battery fell on his foot. We put him in the chamber, and you knew exactly what was going to happen after the first treatment.

“You knew what was dark and dusky in his foot was going to have a hard time healing. What was bright and pink, you knew the blood flow was getting to it. It was amazing to me to watch. His toes went mummified, but the hyperbaric saved the upper part of his foot. So, he lost a few toes, but not the whole foot. Results like that are always the goal.”

St. Luke’s Wood River is pleased to welcome three new primary care advance practice providers: Dr. Abigail Allman, Alisa Barnes, PA-C, and Erin Hess, PA–C, improving access for the community.

Dr. Allman is a full spectrum family medicine physician with advanced training in obstetrics. She brings a warm, relationship centered approach to primary care — one that emphasizes listening deeply, honoring each patient’s story and supporting health at every stage of life.

Barnes, whose extensive background spans family practice, pediatrics, urgent care and academic precepting, is also joining St. Luke’s Wood River’s Family Medicine Clinic in Hailey. Barnes will primarily support Drs. Amy Drumm, JP Prouty and Cortney Vandenburgh. With experience across Idaho, Utah and California, Barnes brings broad clinical expertise and a passion for supporting healthy families in the communities she serves.

Hess will primarily support Dr. John Hatzenbuehler and Dr. Steven Greenberg at the Family Medicine clinic. Hess joins the team with a strong background in community health and hospital medicine, along with clinical experience in primary care, behavioral health, addiction medicine, pediatrics and rural health.

Elmore County welcomed its very first baby of the new year when little Lerai arrived at St. Luke’s Elmore on New Year’s Day at 9:37 a.m. She weighed seven pounds, six ounces, and measured 19 inches long, making an early debut just four days ahead of mom Summer’s original due date of Jan. 6. Parents Summer and Everett are soaking up every moment with their sweet daughter. Congratulations to this now family of three!

The Boise NICU team participated in the annual Make-A-Wish Idaho Polar Bear Challenge this past weekend at Lucky Peak State Park.

This unique fundraiser challenges area do-gooders to plunge into the icy reservoir waters to raise money to grant wishes for local kids who are undergoing cancer treatments, awaiting organ transplants or dealing with other critical illnesses.

This year, the Boise NICU team helped raised nearly $4,600 for Make-A-Wish Idaho. Thanks and warm thoughts to the team!

St. Luke's Boise makes Becker’s 100 Great Hospitals in America list.

Becker’s Hospital Review recently released its 2025 “Great Hospitals in America” list, and among the list of 100 health care organizations stands St. Luke’s Boise Medical Center.

According to Becker’s, hospitals on the list “are recognized for delivering excellent clinical care, prioritizing patient safety and driving innovation through research, education and continuous improvement.”

Hospitals were chosen for the list based on analyses of the hospital’s recent achievements, including U.S. News & World Report and Newsweek rankings, Healthgrades awards, CMS star ratings and safety grades from The Leapfrog Group. Becker's also accepted nominations.

“This recognition is an incredible testament to the work and dedication of our clinical and support teams, along with leadership,” said Marle Hoff, chief nursing officer for St. Luke’s Boise Medical Center.

“We bring our best each day with a focus on delivering high-quality, patient-centered care to serve the health needs of our community. Earning a place on this list of 100 hospitals throughout the U.S. is something to be celebrated.”

After an amazing 25-year career as an Idaho pulmonary, critical care and sleep physician, Dr. Brian Goltry retired Jan. 2.

As one of the original members of his group at St. Luke’s Clinic – Idaho Pulmonary Associates: Meridian, he had a major hand in building and curating a culture that is tight-knit and supportive.

As a testament to that, it was no surprise that 14 of his clinical colleagues showed up on his last day just to thank and congratulate him on a job well done.

“Humble, funny and always down-to-Earth in his communication, Brian has always put his patients and their needs first,” said St. Luke’s Senior Vice President and Chief Physician Executive Dr. Jim Souza.

“[He] has made an amazing and positive impact on the people of our great state. Thank you for the amazing gift of talent, personality and dedication you gave to our group and to the people of Idaho.”

One of St. Luke’s core goals is to create healthier communities by building strong partnerships, delivering measurable outcomes and maximizing our impact by inspiring others.

The health system aims to achieve this by collaborating with local organizations across the region — working together to improve the health and well-being of the people St. Luke's serves.

The Community Health Improvement Fund is one way St. Luke’s fulfills its community benefit commitment. This year, St. Luke’s awarded $998,874 in CHIF grants to 113 organizations. Awards ranged from $1,000 to $44,000, with an average grant of $8,840.
