Most people think it’s their hormones, their gut, their metabolism, but almost always, it’s the structure of their day that’s keeping their body stuck in a state of compensation.
Because here’s the truth: when energy isn’t available at the right time, the body adapts.
Cortisol rises to fill the gaps.
Blood sugar becomes less stable.
Leptin signaling gets disrupted.
Sleep, hormones, and digestion—all begin to shift.
These are not separate issues. These are a connected response.
Pattern 1: Waking up with no appetite… and waiting to eat until you feel hungry.
This gets labeled as “listening to your body” or “intuitive eating” when really, morning appetite is a reflection of your cortisol rhythm and energy availability.
Cortisol should rise in the morning to help mobilize energy and create hunger. When that rhythm is off, appetite disappears.
And when you delay eating, it reinforces the disruption, keeping cortisol elevated longer, blood sugar less stable, and energy more inconsistent throughout the day.
Pattern 2: What we call the “lettuce sandwich.”
You anchor your morning and attempt to wind down at night, but the middle of your day, when your metabolism is most active, is under-fueled, rushed, or inconsistent.
This is when your body needs the most energy to stabilize blood sugar, support thyroid output, and maintain steady energy production.
When it’s not there, the body compensates.
Cortisol fills the gap. Energy dips follow.
Cravings increase. Sleep later that night becomes harder.
This is where people get stuck.
They’re doing a lot of the “right” things, but their body doesn’t have the energy, at the right time, to respond differently.
So it stays locked in defense mode.
This is the work. Not adding more, or chasing the perfect meal plan.
But breaking the cycle, by building a day your body can rely on— where energy is available, rhythms are supported, and signals begin to stabilize.
Because when energy becomes available, everything downstream has the chance to follow.
If you saw yourself in this, that matters.
