June is Scleroderma Awareness Month 💙
Scleroderma is a chronic autoimmune disorder that causes hardening and tightening of the skin and connective tissues. The name itself comes from the Greek words meaning "hard skin." But this condition can affect far more than just the skin — it can involve the heart, lungs, kidneys, blood vessels, and joints.
👉 There are two primary types of scleroderma:
• Localized Scleroderma, such as morphea or linear scleroderma, often affects only the skin and underlying tissues.
• Systemic Sclerosis can affect the entire body, with two main forms:
o Limited Cutaneous Scleroderma, often associated with CREST syndrome (Calcinosis, Raynaud’s, Esophageal dysfunction, Sclerodactyly, and Telangiectasia)
o Diffuse Cutaneous Scleroderma, which progresses rapidly and can cause serious internal organ damage.
👩⚕️ Scleroderma is more common in women, but it affects people of all ages and ethnicities. Early diagnosis, regular monitoring, and symptom management are essential to improving quality of life and limiting complications.
While there is no cure yet, advancements in research and care continue to offer hope.
Let’s raise awareness, support those living with scleroderma, and spread knowledge that can lead to earlier diagnoses and better outcomes.
