How Do Pregnancy Tests Work?
Not sure how to go about a pregnancy test? When do you take one? How do you know your results are accurate? In this blog, we answer all of these questions so you can get answers about your potential pregnancy. Get the clarity you need to move forward with a pregnancy decision.

How Pregnancy Tests Work
Are you experiencing a missed period, fatigue, or nausea? These are all common symptoms of pregnancy. Your first step of pregnancy confirmation is a pregnancy test.

Pregnancy tests detect the amount of hCG in your urine or blood. HCG stands for a hormone called human chorionic gonadotrophin which is naturally produced by the placenta during pregnancy. HCG is found in both urine and blood around 10 to 11 days after conception.

Highlights
Toes and fingers are free to wiggle.
The embryo shows a preference for the right or left hand.
The electrical activity recorded from the heart of an unborn child resembles that of a newborn.

The brain is still extremely large and makes up ~43% of the embryo’s total weight. For comparison, the brain is only 10% of the newborn’s body weight and 2% of an adult’s body weight.

Week ten marks the end of the embryonic period. The embryo has grown from a single cell into nearly one billion cells that form over 4,000 distinct anatomic structures. The adult has about 4,500 named body parts, so this means that over 90% of these structures first appear during the embryonic period.

This image shows an embryo alive in the womb recorded using fetoscopy at 8 weeks following fertilization (or 10 weeks gestation). Note how the fingers are separate and the toes are free to wiggle. (Image credit: The Center for Bioethical Reform)
The embryo can now bend his elbows and bring his hands together. The embryo can also roll over within the amniotic sac, squint, grasp and point his toes. When the embryo touches his face, he will frequently move his head away. The embryo even makes intermittent breathing motions.

The front and back of the eyeball fuse together. At this point, the eye has a lens, cornea, and retina. The retina will continue growing and maturing for the rest of the pregnancy, and visual acuity continues improving for the first four years of childhood.
