Fear almost kept Leta from joining the RESTART® Sugar Detox Program.

“I’ve felt horrible since the holidays – too many sweets.”
Her eye caught on a listing for a short class called “Sugar Blues”.
“Low stakes -- I’ll just sit in the back, gather info -- no pressure to make changes.”

In class, she learned about her body, felt a connection to others, and heard about RESTART®. Hmmm…

“Something about that program excites me, BUT… I couldn’t do it. It would take more willpower than I have to be sugar free for that long. I'd be overwhelmed and fail and feel worse than I do now! Or worse… what if I start feeling better and have to stay off sugar forever to keep feeling good?”

Then we talked. It’s natural to feel tension – a simultaneous draw and resistance – with an opportunity like this. That tension or charge indicates awareness of incoming change. We usually don’t feel ready for change when we're standing on the precipice… and often fall back to what is familiar. My advice: drop into that sensation of charge… FEEL it, and then perhaps you can trust that you DO have the capacity to hold this new energy and find power in it.
She made the decision and joined the group.
“Wow! That experience was so empowering and connective! I'm not alone. I feel incredible (no more headaches or knee pain), and it wasn’t even that hard! I know myself in a whole new way and how to listen to my body to keep feeling good. I’m so glad I decided to join!”

How are those New Year's Resolutions going?

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/186mXQBEQZ/

Shaming ourselves does not help us reach our goals.

Did you make any health-related New Year’s Resolutions? How are those going, now that we’re in the 3rd week of January? Are you still riding the wave of excited determination, or is your energy starting to fade a bit?

The reason I ask is that many people don’t stick with their resolutions beyond a few weeks… because the resolutions are almost always built on a foundation of guilt or shame.

“Last year, I let myself get so out of shape. I hate the way I look now.”
“I ate so much junk food over the holidays, and now I feel horrible.”
“I let my work take over my life and never get outside for walks anymore. My body is falling apart.”

A good chunk of my time with clients is spent helping them reframe their motivations into inspirations.

When we are motivated to make a change, we are pushing with all our resources, often relying on a burst of energy (which is not likely to lead us to sustainable, consistent change).

When we take time to integrate and generate self-compassion for our thoughts, emotions, assumptions, and behaviors of the past and present, we can open up space to become inspired by new ideas and opportunities. To be led by inspiration is easeful and full of curiosity and creativity.

I can help you reframe your goals into inspirations that will carry you to beautiful new places. Let’s get started.

When we’re stuck in chronic inflammation, daily life gets hard.

When working well, your immune system is like an orchestra with a fantastic conductor. Your tissues inflame appropriately in response to infections or injuries, and then, within a few days to weeks, the inflammation recedes to make space for healing. When inflammation levels remain high for many weeks, months, or years, our tissues and organs cannot function properly and begin to sustain damage.

Common causes of chronic inflammation include:
• Untreated or chronic infections
• A diet including industrial/refined oils (including canola, soy or safflower oil) and sugar and other refined carbohydrates (everything made with sugar or flour: crackers, chips, pancakes, tortillas, cereal, etc.)
• Poor gut microbiome health
• Chronic sleep deprivation or disruption
• Physical inactivity
• Prolonged work/family/social stress
• Exposure to toxins like chemicals and mold

How does chronic inflammation show up in YOUR body?
Do you experience chronic pain, poor sleep, anxiety/irritability/depression, frequent illness with prolonged recovery time, digestive discomfort (diarrhea, constipation, acid reflux), high blood sugar (caused by insulin resistance), back pain, muscle weakness, or skin rashes?

The above symptoms are uncomfortable, and if present for long enough, can lead to bigger issues like autoimmunity, diabetes, and cardiovascular dysfunction.

My work as a Functional Nutritional Therapist is to identify in my clients as many sources of chronic inflammation as possible and get to work clearing out the causes so the body can find it’s way back to balance. A sugar-detox and diet overhaul is a great way to jumpstart this process. If there’s more terrain to travel, I have many tools in my kit, including functional lab testing, to help me get to the roots of your discomfort.

Sugar cravings? It might be an imbalanced gut microbiome! Brief explanation below, in addition to an invitation to my next RESTART® Real Food Sugar Detox beginning on February 11th.

Be well,
Kendy

Microbial overgrowths commonly cause strong sugar/carb cravings.

In my last post, I explained how shifting our macronutrient ratio intake (protein and fat vs. carbohydrates) can reduce sugar cravings and help us make long term metabolic changes for the better (including losing weight and reversing diabetes). This post explains the influence of the gut microbiome on cravings.

Candida albicans is a fungus that lives in our intestines along with other fungi, bacteria, and viruses; together they make up our gut microbiome. Candida species feed on sugar and refined carbohydrates. When Candida populations overgrow, our bodies express the imbalance with a variety of symptoms: itchy ears and skin rashes, white film on tongue, athlete’s foot, frequent yeast infections, headaches, bloating, diarrhea or constipation, acid reflux, and almost always, strong sugar/carb cravings. When we rebalance the gut microbiome, the cravings reduce considerably, and in many people, disappear completely.

Often something as simple as a 3-week sugar detox can kickstart a rebalancing of the microbiome and help you kick those cravings out the door (without a huge effort)! If the sugar detox doesn’t fully clear up your symptoms, then I can help you in 1:1 nutritional therapy sessions to identify the imbalance(s) and design a healing protocol that will get you feeling like yourself again.

Sugar Cravings are not a willpower issue.

Many clients, when they first come to me, assume that they will always crave sweets. Whenever they have tried to eat less sugar, they feel like they’re constantly struggling against their body. They feel weak and ashamed when the cravings “beat” them. Have you had this experience?

In actuality, sugar and carb cravings are usually driven by an out-of-balance metabolism and/or gut microbiome. Most people respond positively to an increase in protein and healthy fat intake, both of which fuel the body for much longer periods than carbohydrates, allowing blood sugar to stabilize and cravings to diminish. We can relax and exhale and think more proactively (instead of reacting to the cravings). We then can make the choices to pass up sugar and refined carbohydrates much more easily than we could just a few weeks prior. Positive changes just snowball from there.

Join Kendy's upcoming 5-Week RESTART® Real Food Sugar Detox program for guidance to do just this. Five sessions, with a 21-day detox built in. Five weeks to a whole new perspective!
