Resentment is a normal feeling among caregivers. Perhaps you have siblings who are not helping provide care or maybe you are an only child and became a caregiver by default.

Feeling like you have to do it all, and do it all by yourself, is the quickest route to resentment.

Have you experienced this emotion?

Dogs are a powerful animal, and they have complex needs that go beyond love and affection. While of course, it’s important to love on your pup, you also need to keep in mind that they need exercise to help work out their excitement and discipline to help create a routine and a strong set of rules and expectations.

How do you think your relationship with your dog fares in terms of this balance? Is there anything your dog might be lacking?

The longer you spend time as a caregiver, the more isolated you may feel.

Caregivers are at risk of losing themselves with no one to talk with day in and day out except the care receiver. Over time, friends stop calling since you are no longer available and you hesitate to call them because you don’t want to burden them.

It’s important to find something outside of caregiving you can take part in. Whether it’s a monthly book club, weekly coffee with a friend, or spending time with a church group, do something for you.

Taking food is a natural part of scavenging in the wild, and something that’s been ingrained in your dog thanks to several thousand years of evolution. So while you can’t expect your dog to stop wanting food, you CAN disrupt the emotional state they have when they’re around food.

Do this by rewarding them with small scraps when they do what you want, like lying down away from the kitchen. You can also practice boundaries by placing a plate of food a few feet in front of your dog and working with them to sit and coexist with the food in a calm manner. If they move toward the food, tap their nose firmly with your fingers. Continue practicing this by moving the plate closer to them, then reward their good behavior (i.e. a state of calm in the presence of food) with a treat.
