Are Vaccines Safe? A Functional Medicine Perspective

In functional medicine, we focus on individualized care, prevention, and supporting the body’s innate ability to heal. Vaccines are one of the most studied medical interventions in history and, for the vast majority of people, they are safe and effective.

Here’s how we look at vaccines through a functional lens:

• Vaccines help train the immune system, reducing the risk of severe illness, complications, and long-term damage
• Extensive research shows no link between vaccines and autism or chronic disease
• Side effects are usually mild and temporary (soreness, low-grade fever, fatigue)
• Serious reactions are rare and carefully monitored

Functional medicine also recognizes that not every body is the same. That’s why informed, personalized conversations matter. Factors like autoimmune conditions, prior reactions, nutrient status, gut health, and overall immune balance should always be considered.

✨ The goal isn’t fear or blind acceptance — it’s informed choice, individualized care, and immune resilience.

If you have questions or concerns, talk with a provider who listens, evaluates your whole health picture, and helps you make the best decision for you.

“Choosing whether or not to receive a vaccine should always be a personal medical decision. In healthcare, informed consent matters. Each individual’s health history, risks, values, and circumstances are unique, and no medical intervention should ever be forced. Respectful conversations and personalized care are essential to supporting true health and autonomy.”

🦠 Influenza (Flu): Know the Signs & Protect Yourself 💉

Common signs & symptoms of the flu may include:
• Sudden fever or chills
• Headache and body aches
• Extreme fatigue or weakness
• Sore throat
• Cough and chest discomfort
• Runny or stuffy nose
• Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea (more common in children)

🤒 The flu can come on quickly and hit hard—often more severe than a common cold.

How the flu shot helps:
✔️ Reduces your risk of getting the flu
✔️ If you do get sick, symptoms are often milder
✔️ Lowers risk of complications like pneumonia, hospitalization, and missed work
✔️ Protects vulnerable people around you (kids, elderly, immunocompromised)

💡 Even healthy adults can get very sick from influenza—vaccination is one of the best preventive tools we have.

Thinking twice about breast implants? Please read this first. 💬

Breast implants can be a personal choice—and for some people they’re absolutely the right one. But they’re not a “set it and forget it” device, and the long-term risk conversation needs to be louder.

What many people aren’t told clearly enough

The FDA requires a boxed warning + a patient decision checklist for breast implants so patients understand key risks before surgery.

Breast Implant Illness (BII): what it is (and what we know)

Some people with implants report a cluster of systemic symptoms often referred to as Breast Implant Illness—symptoms like:
• Fatigue
• “Brain fog” / memory & concentration issues
• Joint/muscle pain
• Hair loss
• Weight changes
• Anxiety/depression
These symptoms have been reported with all implant types and may show up soon after surgery or years later.

Medical literature continues to evaluate BII; a 2025 systematic review describes common symptom patterns (fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, joint/muscle complaints) and the complexity of possible mechanisms.

Rare—but real—cancer-related risks you should know
• BIA-ALCL (a rare lymphoma) is primarily associated with textured implants; the FDA continues to track and report cases.
• The FDA has also issued safety communications about squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and other rare cancers occurring in the capsule (scar tissue) around implants.

Bottom line: if you’re considering implants, go in with eyes wide open ✅

Before you commit, ask your surgeon:
1. What type of implant and surface (smooth vs textured) are you recommending—and why?
2. What are the most common complications and re-operation rates in your practice?
3. What symptoms should make me seek evaluation for systemic issues or capsular problems?
4. What’s the long-term monitoring plan (imaging, rupture screening, follow-up schedule)?
5. What are my alternatives (fat transfer, external options, reconstruction approaches)?

✨ Your body, your choice—but it should be an informed choice.

Educational post only—not medical advice. If you have implants and feel unwell, don’t ignore it. Talk with a qualified clinician and a board-certified plastic surgeon to review symptoms and options.
