Horses tell us what we aren’t hearing
One day during my Part 2 training in Eagala, Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association, I still hadn’t really “gotten” it. I understood what my job was but I have to say not why. I had not gotten what would happen during a session. Now I will tell you that not any one session is like another so my experience may never happen to you or maybe it will.
This day we were all going to show how we handle our chaos. So when life is tough I go see my horse. What’s a better thing then that? So I went over to one of the horses in the arena and started to put my hands on her, patting and grooming her with just my hands. I realized I love going for massages so started to massage her. I left one side and moved to the other where she moved and put my hands where she wanted them. She really was almost asleep and I went into a meditative state, the rest of the 30 odd people were just not part of anything between us. It was a beautiful moment and then it happened... I heard as loud as someone next to me saying it, “you need to do this more with your own horse”... OMG I was in tears as Wave Wise was 29 at the time and no I didn’t get up to see him that much at all. At that moment, shocked by what I had just heard, I was wide awake and looked at the sleeping horse. She now had her head to the side and her mouth was moving. What??? I looked and asked “did you just tell me that?” I have to say “I GOT IT” at that moment. Stand back, watch everything the horse does and hold space for who if there. If you step in too soon you might just ruin that moment which may not have arrived yet.
Eagala is different because you don’t have to say anything at all if you don’t want to. It is easier to talk through what the horse is doing then talk about yourself. So many times in the arena I have heard “I can’t believe I’m telling you this, I haven’t told anyone”. Questions asked are asked about the horse and what you have said. During the training I spoke of above I learned so much. To make sure you can see the horse at all times, hold the space, a simple questions like “I saw the head turn and mouth moving. What was that about?” can be so powerful. If any one of the 15 people watching had moved to see the horse, which BTW they stood in one spot and couldn’t see, they would have known to ask. So much happened without anyone seeing.
