Eagala sessions - Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association Horses tell us what we aren’t hearing

One day during my Part 2 training in Eagala, Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association, I still hadn’t really “gotten” it. Now I will tell you that not any on

e session is like another so my experience may never happen to you or maybe it will. This day we were all going to show how we handle our chaos. What’s a better thing then that? So I went over to one of the horses in the arena and started to put my hands on her, patting and grooming her with just my hands. I realized I love going for massages so started to massage her. I left one side and moved to the other where she moved and put my hands where she wanted them. She really was almost asleep and I went into a meditative state, the rest of the 30 odd people were just not part of anything between us. It was a beautiful moment and then it happened... I heard as loud as someone next to me saying it, “you need to do this more with your own horse”... OMG I was in tears as Wave Wise was 29 at the time and no I didn’t get up to see him that much at all. At that moment, shocked by what I had just heard, I was wide awake and looked at the sleeping horse. She now had her head to the side and her mouth was moving. I looked and asked “did you just tell me that?” I have to say “I GOT IT” at that moment. Stand back, watch everything the horse does and hold space for who if there. If you step in too soon you might just ruin that moment which may not have arrived yet. Eagala is different because you don’t have to say anything at all if you don’t want to. It is easier to talk through what the horse is doing then talk about yourself. So many times in the arena I have heard “I can’t believe I’m telling you this, I haven’t told anyone”. Questions asked are asked about the horse and what you have said. During the training I spoke of above I learned so much. To make sure you can see the horse at all times, hold the space, a simple questions like “I saw the head turn and mouth moving. What was that about?” can be so powerful. If any one of the 15 people watching had moved to see the horse, which BTW they stood in one spot and couldn’t see, they would have known to ask. So much happened without anyone seeing. This is your story not ours. We are not to use our own perception so we use clean or non-interpretive questions so we don’t influence your responses. Uses are huge and include Autism, PTSD, Chronic Pain, Anxiety, Depression, Mobility, Sexual Trauma, ADHD, Addiction, mTBI and just about anything. I like my favorite which is simple and wonderful, “Get your smile back”
I have been using Eagala while working for Lone Survivor Foundation for the veterans. Some of the stuff I have seen is just amazing. We just can’t write this stuff. Love the model because when you work things out it stays with you more then talking about it.

UPDATED

You have likely heard of the tragic death of over 70 horses at the Buetler Ranch in Elk City, Oklahoma. Horses that are descendants of over five generations of legendary rodeo horses perished when accidentally fed horse feed that was contaminated with Monensin, an ionophoric antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections in cattle and sometimes mixed with cattle and livestock feeds. In cattle, it can improve feed efficiency and average daily gain.

However, in horses, tiny amounts of monensin causees damage to the mitochondria in horses, and disrupts the sodium potassium ion fluxes in the heart, leading to cardiovascular failure.

Attached is a list of horse feed mills that are ionophore free - no ionophores are on the mill property and risk of contamination is eliminated. Ionophone "safe" mills have separate facilities and equipment for livestock and horse feed production, however, ionophores are present and the risk of contamination is not eliminated.

This list is not exhaustive. In California, Stable Mix made by Elk Grove Milling and Integrity Feeds made by Star Milling are both ionophore free facilities.

If in doubt about a feed manufacturers ionophore status, call or e mail them. Unfortunately, some small local mills may not be able to guarantee ionophore free status.

UPDATE! Dr Rachel Mottet of Legacy Equine Nutrition has updated their list of ionophore free equine feed mills. Her team contacted all the mills listed to verify their ionophore status, a huge task!
Here is the link to that document.

For all my peeps out there. I may not be working doing eagala right now and I do miss it at times BUT I am still doing the work in a completely different way. I want to say I learned so much that my new business i believe is doing well because of what I learned in training.
I now run the Bolivar Escape Room. If you've never done an escape room you should. I totally use eagala responses to give extra clues and love it. My room is all ages, family friendly so I have many different personalities come through. It is so much fun and I am sometimes still amazed at how eagala questioning back to "we need a clue" works amazing.
So thanks to all who have taught me what I know. I believe it has helped my room stay 5 stars in all reviews.
One day I may be back in the eagala world. My only regret is my mare Snowflake is made for eagala work and doesn't get to do it anymore.

A Poem ~ What do They See?

Looking at a horse, what do you see?
It depends on what you want us to be.
Some see on our backs riding dreams,
A signed up member in clubs or teams.
None matters if friendship is the goal,
Look closely into the windows of the soul.
Connection, partnership and bond,
Love is much deeper than being just fond.
Personality, character and spirit are there,
Our wonderful gifts we happily share.
Part of the family and friend you can trust,
Our manes soak up tears and will not rust.
Tell us your secrets and we will never tell,
Gift of healing we give if you are not well.
A horse is good for body, soul and mind,
And the very best therapy you can find.
Life lessons when the student is ready,
Yes teachers can be a hairy neddy.
There are so many things a horse can do,
What does a horse see looking at you?

So true

So true

Recent studies conducted by the Institute of Heart-Math provide a clue to explain the two-way ′′healing′′ that occurs when we're close to horses.
According to researchers, the heart has an electromagnetic field larger than the brain: a magnetometer can measure the energy field of the heart that radiates from 2.4 meters to 3 meters around the human body.
While this is certainly significant, perhaps more impressive than the electromagnetic field projected by the heart of a horse is five times larger than that of a human being (imagine an electromagnetic sphere around the horse) and it can influence straight into our own heart rate.
Horses are also likely to have what science has identified as a "coherent′′ heart rate (heart rate pattern) that explains why we can feel better when we're close to them. Studies have found a coherent heart pattern or HRV to be a solid measure of well-being and consistent with emotional states of calm and joy-that is, we exhibit such patterns when we feel positive emotions.
A coherent heart pattern is indicative of a system that can recover and adapt to stressful situations very efficiently. Many times, we just need to be in the presence of horses to feel a sense of well-being and peace.
In fact, research shows that people experience many physiological benefits by interacting with horses, including lower blood pressure and heart rate, higher beta-endorphins (neurotransmitters acting as pain suppressors), decreased stress levels, decreased feelings of anger, hostility, tension and anxiety, better social working; and greater feelings of empowerment, confidence, patience and self-efficacy.

Horses can help so much with grief. Give it a try when you need big shoulders and a warm nuzzle

Grief….
This painting by the amazing artist MJ’s Equine Art Studios, LLC who had lost her sister…..
This painting sums it up my grief more than I can put Into words…
This hit me like a brick wall when I seen Maggie’s post …. She calls this work of art …..”Holding Space”❤️💔
Head over to her page to order a print of this moving painting ❤️

This is where I was when I got the news that they found my sons , Kyler, body…
I was in my stallions (Shiners Got Swagger) , pen feeding hay…
I dropped in the feeder screaming in pain… and this horse ….. my Angel without wings….sat over me and nussled my hair … not scared of my emotions… and stayed with me till I could catch my breath…
Hard to believe the anniversary date of when Kyler passed is coming up so quickly, December 16th…. Same day my Dad passed away several years before Kyler… brings me a little peace knowing they are together ❤️💔

Sometimes in the quiet of the morning sunrise the reality hits like a brick wall that Kyler is truly gone…
It is easier to stay busy during the day to keep the waves of grief from washing over me…
But occasionally…a walk through the grocery store and seeing his favourite foods…
Or this time of year … seeing his favourite things that I always got him for Christmas presents… he loved new socks… cologne…. fuzzy soft pj pants…Knocks me to my knees and I have had to leave a store as I can’t fight back the tears…..
Time doesn’t heal Grief but I am learning how to carry grief a little more gracefully than I did in the beginning…

But as time goes by…I have also learned to not avoid “grief “ but to sit with it when it visits… embrace it…feel all the feels….allow the waves of tears…just don’t drown in them…and get up a little more gracefully then I did in the beginning and carry on with my day

I always thought grief and happiness were two totally separate emotions and you could only have one or the other
I Am now learning they can go hand in hand….
I am learning grief… and gratitude
can exist simultaneously…
The grief of loosing my son ….and also being grateful that I had him for 25 yrs…as many that have reached out to me have lost their children waaay younger 💔
Hope and heartache can live in the same space…..
The heartache of the reality he is really physically gone ….and then seeing the beautiful signs he gives me makes me feel a small amount of gratitude …
Sorrow and Joy can both be present sometimes both in the same breath….
Grateful for the 25 yrs I got to be his Mom… and grateful for the signs he still sends… just wish for one more hug… one more I love you Mom

For those of you grieving the loss of a loved one this holiday season…. I see you… I understand….I hold space for you…be kind to yourself… know that it is ok to not be ok… it’s ok to be sad…. It’s ok to be happy …. Be kind to yourself ❤️
For those of you who haven’t lost a loved one … please be patient with those of us who have… for you it may seem like for ever ago… but for us it is every day….

My wish for all of you is….
Make sure you hug your loved ones a little tighter … a lil longer…
Say the I Love you’s…
Make the phone call..
Don’t take time for granted…
Live your life to the fullest
Be kind…. Always be kind… you have no idea the hell a person might be going through…

This artist captured what I couldn’t put Into words… Maggie you are AMAZING ❤️

There once was a young boy with a very bad temper. The boy’s father wanted to teach him a lesson, so he gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper he must hammer a nail into their wooden fence.

On the first day of this lesson, the little boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. He was really mad!

Over the course of the next few weeks, the little boy began to control his temper, so the number of nails that were hammered into the fence dramatically decreased.

It wasn’t long before the little boy discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.

Then, the day finally came when the little boy didn’t lose his temper even once, and he became so proud of himself, he couldn’t wait to tell his father.

Pleased, his father suggested that he now pull out one nail for each day that he could hold his temper.

Several weeks went by and the day finally came when the young boy was able to tell his father that all the nails were gone.

Very gently, the father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence.

“You have done very well, my son,” he smiled, “but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same.”

The little boy listened carefully as his father continued to speak.
“When you say things in anger, they leave permanent scars just like these. And no matter how many times you say you’re sorry, the wounds will still be there”.
