Let's talk about something no one wants to admit: Not all therapists are the right fit.

So how do you know when it's not working? Here are the red flags:
🚩 They make you feel judged or ashamed. Therapy should be a safe space. Period. If your therapist is critical, dismissive, or makes you feel bad about your struggles, that's not okay.

🚩 They talk more about themselves than they listen to you. A little self-disclosure can build connection. But if every session becomes about THEIR life? That's a problem.

🚩 They don't respect your boundaries or pace. Good therapists meet you where you are. If they're pushing you too hard, too fast, or ignoring your requests to slow down—that's a red flag.

🚩 You consistently feel worse after sessions. Some discomfort is normal—growth can hurt. But if you're leaving EVERY session feeling drained, worse, or retraumatized? Something's wrong.

🚩 They push their personal beliefs onto you. Politics, religion, lifestyle choices—your therapist's job is to help YOU clarify YOUR values, not impose theirs.

🚩 They dismiss your concerns or feelings. "You're overreacting." "That's not a big deal." "Just think positive." These phrases have NO place in therapy.

🚩 There's no clear treatment plan or goals. If you've been going for months with no sense of direction or progress, it's time to reassess.

🚩 They violate professional boundaries. Following you on social media, texting outside of sessions, or any dual relationships? Major ethical violation.

The right therapist will:
✅ Make you feel heard, validated, and safe
✅ Respect your boundaries and pace
✅ Challenge you gently, never harshly
✅ Have a clear plan for your goals
✅ Create a space where you can be vulnerable without fear

If you're not getting that? You deserve better.
At McIntyre Psychological Services, we believe in the power of the right therapeutic relationship.

Starting therapy can feel intimidating—especially if you don't know what to expect. 💭
Here's the truth: therapy isn't about being "broken" or needing to be "fixed." It's about gaining tools, understanding yourself on a deeper level, and learning how to navigate life in a healthier way.
If you're thinking about starting therapy (or just started), here are a few things that might help:
It's okay to try a few therapists before finding "the one." Fit matters. If something feels off, it's okay to keep looking.
Progress isn't a straight line. Some weeks you'll feel like you're flying, others you'll wonder if anything is working. That's normal. Healing has ups and downs.
You might feel worse before you feel better. Therapy brings things to the surface—and that can be uncomfortable. But working through it is how you heal.
You're not broken. You're human. Therapy helps you understand your patterns, not judge them.
The real work happens outside of sessions. Your therapist gives you the map, but you have to walk the path.
If you've been thinking about taking that first step, this is your sign. Ike McIntyre Psychological Services is here to support you wherever you are—offering compassionate, professional care nationwide. 💚
