Myth➡️Once your baby has reached birth weight you no longer need to wake them to feed over night
Fact💡There is not a one size fits all for this recommendation! We know that breastmilk is digested quickly and it is normal for infants to feed 8-12 times in a day, this is necessary for proper weight gain and maintaining milk supply. We also know that utilizing overnight prolactin spikes for milk removal keeps prolactin levels as they should be throughout the day.
Myth➡️ If your baby is feeding more than “x” amount of time at the breast, they are just burning calories.
Fact💡Feedings often shorten some over time as babies become less sleepy & more efficient, but in the early days it is not abnormal to see longer feedings quite regularly. While this recommendation may be true under certain circumstances ex: for preterm babies or those in the NICU needing extra feeding support, but for full term healthy babies this is typically not a concern.
Myth➡️ Breastfeeding is the biological norm, it just comes naturally.
Fact 💡For MANY moms, breastfeeding does not just come naturally or easily. It is a learning curve for both mom and baby that often needs proper nurturing and support to begin to fall into a natural rhythm.
