It’s International Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Month!

From October 1-31, you can celebrate AAC month by promoting acceptance for all forms of communication.

Things to remember….

-ALL individuals CAN communicate.

-A few examples of different forms of communication are sign language, devices that use technology, and communication boards.

I love seeing how AACs can be life changing for individuals. Reach out if you’d like to learn more or would like other ways to advocate for those around you!

This week in speech…

We are celebrating the beginning of fall with an apple theme! We are reading “Ten Apples Up on Top”, “apple picking”, and apple stamping! 🍎

At our clinic we love using themes as a fun and engaging way to target speech and language skills. Themes allow us to practice comprehension, inferencing, and vocabulary skills. According to research, providing natural opportunities to apply information leads to growth in communication and application.

Spencer Speech Therapy, PLLC is owned by Spencer Shuford, a nationally certified and state licensed Speech Language Pathologist. As a native of Boone, North Carolina, Spencer was eager to open a clinic to serve her community.

Spencer graduated with her master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from East Tennessee State University. She attended Appalachian State University, where she completed her bachelor’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders

Spencer has a passion for working with children and their families to reach their unique communication goals. She enjoys serving children with an array of speech and language disorders with special interests in working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, early language intervention, and speech sound disorders.

During her professional career, Spencer has had the opportunity to work with a variety of populations and disorders in the home, childcare, preschool, and clinic settings. She has gained experience working with children with Developmental Delays, Down Syndrome, Autism, Childhood Apraxia of Speech, Language-Based Literacy Disorders, Articulation and Phonological Disorders, Receptive-Expressive Language Disorders, Social Pragmatic Disorders, and children with AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) devices.

Spencer is licensed by the board of North Carolina and has her Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech Language Hearing Association.

Spencer is married to her husband, Taylor, and they have a son, Tate, and a daughter, Emmie. In her free time, Spencer loves spending time with family and friends, gardening, and taking walks with her dog, Opie.
