High-Functioning Substance Use in the Workplace:

Many professionals appear successful on the outside—while privately struggling with substance use. These high-functioning individuals often go unnoticed, yet the impact is real:

Strained focus and decision-making

Damaged relationships

Risk of burnout and worsening health

At Brighter Start Health, we provide confidential, flexible care through our virtual Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)—designed for high-achievers who want support without stepping away from their careers.

You have to learn to let people be who they are. They won’t change. The sooner you recognize this and accept who others are, the lower your stress levels and frustration will be.

I love this idea of asking ourselves why we tolerate poor behavior, rather than why others treat us that way. People do what works. They lie, cheat, and manipulate because YOU allow it to happen and because it helps them to have power over us. They talk down to you and tear apart your self esteem because it’s been allowed. The relationship you have with them has allowed this behavior, and for many, there’s a long line of past partners, family or friends that have also allowed this behavior.

We need to stop being surprised when people continuously do the same things, and start responding in a way that respects and honors us. A lot of times this requires rewiring our brain and addressing root causes of our low self esteem, or what attracted us to these relationships to start with. For some, this can lead back to childhood and the relationships we had with caregivers. Unpacking all of this can be a sensitive process, but therapy can help!

Hope For The Journey.. Our Journey

Hope For The Journey Therapeutic Services, PLLC opened it’s doors in January 2020, though it’s vision has been alive for many years!

Christen Murphy, owner of Hope for the Journey, is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. She offers individual, couple's, and family counseling both face to face and online to NC residents. She is a rostered clinician with the NC Child Treatment Program for TF-CBT (Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and has experience working in community mental health as well as residential treatment. In her own words, “I opened my practice in hopes of further assisting my clients in their journey of living a life of happiness and fulfillment despite life's circumstances. Growing up in Ashe County, I knew there was a huge need for mental health providers and I feel honored and blessed to give back to my community through my work.”

Christen’s primary treatment areas involve navigating life's transitions, relationship concerns, women's issues, anxiety and perfectionism. She is also well versed in parent/child relationship problems, depression, and conflict resolution. She thoroughly enjoys working with adolescents and young adults. Christen also offers Pre-marital counseling through the Prepare/Enrich program.

“My style of therapy is informal and collaborative, implementing solution focused and strengths based techniques. I strongly believe that YOU are the expert on your life and your life's experiences, and because of this, believe that each client has the capacity within them to enact change. I work alongside my clients to assist with recognizing harmful patterns and thought processes that contribute to negative interactions and experiences. Together we will collaborate on how to create excitement and fulfilment in each day. My work incorporates attachment, humanistic, and systems theories.”
