I guess that means I’m in my 34th year as I took the second exam. 😀

This year marks an exciting milestone for the hand therapy community — 35 years of the Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) credential.

HTCC administered the first CHT examination in 1991, beginning a legacy of recognizing advanced clinical expertise in the treatment of hand and upper extremity conditions.

For more than three decades, the CHT credential has represented a commitment to excellence, specialized knowledge, and high standards in hand therapy practice.

We’re proud to celebrate 35 years of advancing the profession and supporting the therapists who dedicate their careers to improving upper extremity care.

Who is a CHT? 🔍

A Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) is an occupational therapist or physical therapist who has advanced clinical experience, knowledge, and skills in treating conditions of the hand and upper extremity.

To become a CHT, therapists must:
✔️ Be a licensed OT or PT
✔️ Accumulate at least 4,000 hours of direct practice in hand therapy
✔️ Pass a comprehensive certification exam

CHTs are recognized for their commitment to excellence and specialized care, helping patients improve function, reduce pain, and return to the activities that matter most.

When you see the CHT credential, you know you’re working with a therapist dedicated to advanced expertise in hand and upper extremity rehabilitation. 💙

UPDATE!
Most therapists spend a lot of time measuring ROM, Strength, Edema, and Sensation but spend little time looking at the patient, hearing the voice, listening and observing the smallest movements, skin colors, hair patterns.
I put together the basis of treating without pain in the Hand and Upper Extremity. I could add more but wanted to give people a quick guide to help them start to make treatments more patient focused and individual!

I have found the wrist fracture patients have the highest amount of FEAR-PAIN-ANXIETY-FATIGUE and often Depression this is why!
It is not the fracture that is the problem it is the skin and the sensory nerves!! Highest number of PAIN receptors are in the SKIN!! Never let it get stuck!

As a hand therapist and a knitter, I love this!

This drawing is by Anja Rozen, a 13 year old primary school student in Slovenia. She was chosen from 600,000 children around the world to create a piece of art to show what peace looks like. She is the winner of the international Plakat Miru competition.
