Friends, please join High Country UCC (www.highcountryucc.org) and invite your wider circle, as we Celebrate the Return of the Light known as Winter Solstice.

On December 21st, 4:30-8:00 pm at High Country United Church of Christ, 8233 Hwy 421 N, Vilas, a High Country community created labyrinth will be available for meditative walking. Afterwards, you are invited to create an artistic response through writing or visual art. You can come and walk the labyrinth at any time during these hours. At 7:00 we will gather in community and have a blessing.

Please bring a snack to share and a journal of your choice. If you have any questions, please email Heather at thorph@bellsouth.net.

Labyrinths have been found in many cultures for the last 3,000 years or more. A labyrinth is different than a maze. Within a maze you can get lost with twists and turns and dead ends. A walk on a labyrinth is a walk that leads to the center and then back out again. A labyrinth is often used to do a walking meditation in which participants ask a question walking in and open to an answer walking out.

This labyrinth was purchased with money from a sustainability grant and a learning community grant. The canvas labyrinth arrived with the outline of the labyrinth drawn on it and then members of an art and social change learning community painted the labyrinth on the canvas. The members of the learning community are excited to offer this to the community with a belief that art can be used for the wellbeing of ourselves, the community and the world we live in.

Winter solstice is celebrated all over the world and is the longest night of the year occurring sometime between the 20th and 23rd of December. Many spiritual traditions celebrate the return of the light at this time of year.

The Art of Grief Workshop

Our grief work in community can help us to feel a sense of connection and support. Creating art offers us new ways to express our grief and tell our stories. In this workshop, we will be utilizing art and storytelling to encourage gentle expression, insight and growth in our healing. In this group, we will create a safe place to explore our grief using the arts to deepen our understanding and our healing and also to connect with and gain support from others who have experienced a loss. Our stories of loss and grief will be shared within a trusting and nurturing environment.

Seventh Annual World Labyrinth Day May 2nd
You are invited to walk a labyrinth at Cascades in the Plemmons Student Union any time between 7-9pm.
On Reading Day, a labyrinth walk is an opportunity to:
· Quiet your mind before exams.
· Remember those students we have lost this year.
· Walk the same day with people in other countries and states who are walking as a moving mediation for world peace.
The labyrinth is offered through the Learning Community for Expressive Arts and Community Well-Being
“World Labyrinth Day is for everyone and, like the labyrinth itself, is an opportunity to develop tolerance and compassion for others from different walks of life.” Lars Howlett (World Labyrinth Day coordinator)
The Labyrinth was made possible through a Sustainability in the Arts Grant and a Learning Community Grant.

Please email Heather at thorph@bellsouth.net if you have any questions.

Reiki is an ancient system of natural healing from Japan. The word Reiki is best translated as “Universal Life Energy.” Reiki is taught in three levels. In the first course, you will be taught the history of Reiki. You will receive a series of attunements, and learn how to treat yourself and others by giving and receiving treatments.

Reiki is a gentle, non-intrusive touch therapy. It provides deep relaxation, evoking a sense of peace and well-being which helps to restore a natural balance to the body. It has no side effects and complements other forms of medicine and healing therapies. People often experience feelings of lightness, and deep calmness after their sessions.

During a Reiki treatment the person giving Reiki places her hands on the person receiving Reiki in a series of positions that cover the major organs and chakras. Reiki energy flows from the giver to the recipient working on physical, mental and emotional levels. To benefit from Reiki energy, one needs only to be open and willing to receive it.
