Closing out an incredible week at the Global Spine Congress 2025 in Rio de Janeiro.

Our Rothman Orthopaedics Spine team and the AO Spine KF Trauma & Infection had a strong showing — presenting new A3/4 TL burst fracture data, sharing ideas on spinal infections, and connecting with colleagues from across the world. These meetings aren’t just about research; they’re about perspective, collaboration, and pushing the field forward together.

Grateful to Emiliano Vialle and Andrei Joaquim for hosting our group in such a well-organized, warm, and impactful meeting.

Outside the conference, Rio delivered — from the Corcovado views and delicious Picanha to a Flamengo match at the legendary Maracanã and time with great people in a city that didn’t disappoint. Will definitely be back! Looking ahead to keeping this momentum going in Istanbul next year.

Had an engaging experience at the AO Spine KFT&I Fall meeting in Lisbon, Portugal, collaborating with talented surgeons, scientists, and peers. The event sparked insightful discussions, debates, and personal growth opportunities. Under the leadership of Greg Schroeder, we are currently focusing on advancing AO Spine’s knowledge translation initiatives and finalizing publications on the A3/A4 thoracolumbar fracture controversies. Happy to be part of such a great group of surgeons and friends.

Hospital readmissions are undesirable for everyone involved in the care of patients, our Rothman research team looked at the risk factors associated with readmissions after lumbar decompression. We noted that increased age, current smoking status, hospital LOS and a history of renal failure are significant independent predictors for readmissions or complications after these increasingly common spine procedures.
