"Stories are important to me. I grew up on a small dairy farm, perched on a bluff with views of neighboring barns across Steuben, Eastman, Seneca, and Wauzeka. I miss the little dairy farms and family cheese factories that once dotted the driftless landscape.
These paintings began from my drives, where I would marvel at the farms set against overlapping hills. These scenes hold my gaze and make me imagine the lives and pride behind each farm. Every time I pass these landscapes, I look more closely, trying to understand why they captivate me so much.
Painted over several days, these works allow me to live within the landscape. The long, narrow canvases mimic the way the eye moves along the horizon. I divide the paintings to invite questions: What are we really seeing? Can we truly take in an entire vista?
These artworks are created over days, sometimes weeks—the large barn painting took all summer, starting before the leaves appeared. They represent an interaction over time, meditations on place and view. They are not a single moment frozen in time, but an average experience of being there."
