If your child tends to make sounds you think must hurt when they are excited, help them find ways to replace that behavior with something a little more fun and a little less harmful on the voice.
HEAR ME OUT:
1. Lip Sync - If their fav song is playing, show them how to lip sync. NOT WHISPER (whispering is a no go) but lip syncing. Acoustics in the car are terrible, leading us to push. If your child is at a party or in a noisy environment and wanting to dance and sing their heart out, teach them the tool of lip syncing. Let them use their body to “feel the music.”
2. Dance - When your child scores a goal at recess, encourage them to skip the scream and shout and do a celebratory dance instead!
3. Silly sounds - Does your kiddo’s laugh sound like it hurts? Are they pushing? Not the involuntary laugh we love to get and can’t control, but the one we use often to show others we find something amusing…help your cutie play with that laugh to find one that pushes less.
4. Silly faces - Does your kid want to make their friends laugh? Or even share in someone’s amusement? Practice some silly faces they can make with their peers! Sometimes a silly face can replace an otherwise harmful sound.
5. Fun gestures - Your kid can scream to his mate across the playground or they could come up with a cool arm gesture/signals….just saying. Think about it. Consider it. Practice it. And model it!
