Meet NLAHEC's newest medical student at LSU School of Medicine, Taylor Shepherd!

Keep reading to learn about her experiences with NLAHEC.

"When I take time to think about how far I’ve come, it seems unbelievable. I met Dr. Borders at AHEC when I was 16 and had the opportunity to view my very first open heart surgery. I returned home enlightened and touched with a memory I would never forget. I was determined to do whatever I needed to do to become a physician. I continued shadowing Dr. Borders all through high school and college seeing over 30+ office/hospital procedures. Now, he’s nominating me for the 2015 STS Looking to the Future Scholarship for medical students, which would allow me travel with him to San Diego for a cardiothoracic surgeon conference this January (be praying about it!!!). Thanks to AHEC and the people I met through AHEC, I have had the opportunity to see so many areas of medicine which my peers have only read about in textbooks. I'm so thankful that there were people encouraging a young lady (daughter of a food salesman and daycare owner) to chase a dream and for always believing in her along the way. Medical School isn’t a breeze. It is tough and enduring. But when I stop and look around, I see that my life is truly amazing. I am living my dream.."~T. Shepherd
