Do you feel unsure about trying an inhome art therapist for someone experiencing dementia?

I get it. It's tough to commit when you're not certain of the outcome.

Many of our clients were initially hesitant about art therapy. They worried about it not working, or that their person might not get value.

We encouraged them to give it a go, promising they will see their person with dementia in a new life, as a person who is capable of something they couldn’t dream up.

The results? Beyond expectations!

J was an art collector all her life. She never saw herself as artistic. Within two months, J was painting abstractly on canvas with acrylic paints!

Are you ready for the same?

I am a small business owner, but I am also a boy mom, a cat mom, a beach and coffee lover, and an enneagram 1

Balancing my business with my love for motherhood enriches both my personal and professional life.

Have you ever wondered how to tell if a person with moderate dementia had a good time/experience/day? I’ve got some tips to look out for...

Being able to recall the day does NOT mean the day was good or bad. Here are some subtle things to look for:

Do they feel or appear more relaxed than usual?
What’s their body language trying to communicate? Do they feel passive?
What’s their eye contact like? Is it more than usual?
Are they commenting about things around them more so than usual?
Last thing to look out for - Do they appear more tired than usual?

Living with dementia is challenging. There’s so much to take in and that can get exhausting. If your person had a long day, it’s okay for the next day to appear slower. I recommend taking the next day at their pace.

Have you seen any of these changes recently?

Here’s why I decided to start this business.

1. People with dementia can create art
2. 1:1 art therapy sessions is a gift and a break for caregivers
3. There’s often still someone inside waiting to be uncovered.

And since I’ve started offering inhome art therapy for people with dementia, I hear story after story from caregivers who get can’t believe that their Loved One or Client is creating art!

If you’re ready to to bring inhome art therapy to your person with dementia , today’s a great day to get started!

The thing no one tells you about being a dementia caregiver is the fact that you always feel like there’s more to be done, when you should be proud of yourself for all you’ve already done. 🤝

When caring for someone who needs your support, it’s hard to know when to stop caring for someone else and start caring for yourself. This happened to me when I was a memory care director and I ended up with shingles. I was so worried about my residents care and desired them to be engaged all the time... It was an uphill, unrealistic goal. I see this now.

But I'm here to tell you that feeling of never enough is unfortunately common. It means you ARE caring for your person with dementia. And THAT is something to celebrate! 🎉

Cut yourself some slack and know that your care for them is enough and that YOU matter too.

Here’s our best strategy to take a moment for you (aka take a break)

Save this post to for the next time you need encouragement for some ME time!

Think about the answer to these question:
What brings ME joy?
What brings a smile to MY face?
What can I do for ten minutes for ME today?

If you’d like to take this further, draw a circle and start using art supplies of your choice, while thinking of one of these questions... Notice how you feel before and after.

See what comes up for you, being okay with whatever is coming to the surface. Sometimes we have the answers inside, but we’re too afraid to listen.

Our clients consistently participate in the artmaking experience when we implement just these few simple tips:

🔑 Tip #1 - Clear the Clutter - Following this will help your person with dementia focus on the art experience. Clutter can feel distracting to some people.

🔑 Tip #2: Setup the space ahead of time - This one easy trick is key for creating an enticing place to work. If the space is set, how could they turn down the artmaking experience.

🔑 Tip #3 - Genuinely feel and speak with excitement about creating - Don't forget this game-changing move that enables your person with dementia to pick up on your emotions. I’ve seen this time and time again, people are more likely to participate in something with you if you show enthusiasm and excitement to what it is you are doing.

🔑 Tip #4 -Know you can always try again later - The icing on the cake is putting this into practice. If this activity doesn’t work today, it doesn’t mean it won’t work tomorrow or later in the week. Don’t scrap the idea if it isn’t successful on the first try.
