Congratulations to PA Emma Webb, recipient of an MGB Capacity Champion Award! Emma was recognized after a colleague nominated her for a compassionate gesture to a patient readmitted to MGH a short time after a recent hospitalization at another hospital. Emma went above and beyond, in the process overcoming barriers of limited health literacy, limited English proficiency, and inter-hospital and pharmacy coordination, to ensure a safe and smooth discharge for the patient. Thank you, Emma, and congratulations!

HMU Hospitalist Dr. Joe Hodgkin was interviewed on the JAMA Ethics podcast about the ethical responsibility of healthcare professionals to address the public health threat of nuclear weapons! This interview was connected to an article in JAMA Ethics this month, which was part of the August issue of the journal on the topic of Existential Healthcare Ethics. Make sure to listen and read! Happy belated 4th of July! The hospital never sleeps because people are sick and need care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, including weekends and holidays. Congratulations to hospitalist Dr. Chantal Barksdale for receiving a grant from Baker Family Initiative for Transforming Patient Experience and Outcomes, with PGY2 Dr. Sara Al-Zubi and Hospitalist Dr. Kathy May Tran! Dr. Barksdale is a brand-new hospitalist, coming to us from MGH Internal Medicine Residency. Dr. Barksdale previously received degrees from Boston College, University of California-Los Angeles, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She is interested in medical education, health equity, and global health.

The AMC Office of the Chief Medical Officer (OCMO) awarded them a grant from the Baker Family Initiative for Transforming Patient Experience and Outcomes. The generous donation of Jon and Patricia Baker provides funding to support innovative projects aimed at enhancing the patient journey.

Dr. Tran’s project: EmpowerCare+ (with Drs. Sara Al-Zubi, Chantal Barksdale, and Chris Kirwan)
Summary: Create a patient-driven solution that eliminates clinician bottlenecks, allowing patients with limited English proficiency to independently access video interpreters via secured iPads using established MGH interpretation services.

Dr. Moore’s project: My Question List (with Drs. Leigh Simmons, Karen Sepucha, LaVern W. Delaney)
Summary: Improve the experience of care for our inpatients by providing them with care activities that enhance communication of patients’ goals, concerns and questions to their care teams using a simple tool called a Question List. The program will be implemented on inpatient medical units at MGH.
