“Do you know how many of us are praying we live long enough to vote in this election?” The urgent question came to me from a white resident of an assisted-living facility on October 4. Her tone was tinged with a combination of earnestness and resolve.“ - Joshua Frank

*New* Virtual & In-Person Class!

Recent history and politics have felt like an ambush to engaged citizens. Where does it seem our democracy is headed? In this four-session course, we hope to use a deeper understanding of American history to gain a better understanding of the bewildering and terrifying events happening in our country as we approach another national election. This course will use historical themes explored in The Plot Against America by Philip Roth as a lens for understanding where we are now.

📅 Dates & Times:

In-Person at Arlington Community Education: April 25, May 2, 9, and 16 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
Virtual via Zoom: May 14, 21, 28, and June 4 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM.

This is an opportunity to connect deeply with history, understand the present, and anticipate future challenges. Join us for a thought-provoking journey through the pulse of our democracy.

📢 New Course 📢
In an era marked by increasing efforts to ban books—a reflection of deeper societal divisions—our discussions on racism, antisemitism, and systemic injustice gain new urgency. These book bans, emerging in the wake of significant social movements, signal a broader struggle over whose stories are told and heard, affecting our ability to understand and advocate for equity.

Join us for a series of discussions that connect the dots between book banning, historical injustices, and the quest for a more equitable society. We aim to explore how these censorship efforts impact our collective dialogue and ways to foster a more inclusive understanding of the diverse narratives that shape our world.

In-person at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education: April 9, 16, 23, 30, and May 7, 3:30-5:30 pm.

Virtual Sessions on Zoom: April 9, 16, 23, 30, and May 7, 7:00-8:30 pm.

“I imagine a student asking if the story of Phillis Wheatley might be connected to the story of Claudine Gay, two highly accomplished Black women who faced public skepticism regarding their accomplishments from wealthy, white men. If the question came up, it would open up so many questions for students to consider. If no students made the connection, I wouldn’t bring it up without considering the current batch of news stories and opinion pieces as well, nor would I offer my opinion. ‘Make up your own mind,’ I might say.” - Josh Frank, President of EI.
