As a mixed race individual, it saddens me to see all this Juneteenth v. Fourth of July bs all over my FaceBook page. My family is black, but the woman I came from and the people that raised me are white. Of course we've got roots in other places, but I'm American. Regardless of the evil and ugly things that the powers that be in the country have done, still to do, and will continue to do and the unsettling realities of capitalism and whiteness, I realize my entire existence here in this lifetime is only possible because of America and the little bit better that came after the really fu***ng bad.
Are things perfect? Absolutely not. But can we as human beings in the year 2024 drop the us v. them mentality? There is so much gray area, so much mixing and mingling. I know we could all live better lives collectively with "our kinds of people" of all races, backgrounds, and abilities than we do now in this diverse but segregated, racist but won't admit it society. There are good seeds and bad seeds on all sides. That's why I won't pick one and that's why I celebrate both.
How can you claim to be spiritual, religious, and/or woke and be out here damning people for celebrating with their family on a day that most people are granted time off? As someone on their own spiritual journey, I admit that I am far from perfect. I do know one thing though, it is not up to us to judge. We all fall short of the glory of God. There is no printed scoring system that weighs sins. If we're going to be pointing fingers, we need to be pointing them at ourselves.
