MGH Voice Center’s SLP, Caroline Raymond, and MGH IHP SLP graduate student, Erica Werner, worked with head Tufts Volleyball Coach, Cora Thompson, during an on-site visit at Tufts Cousens Gymnasium. This on-site visit helped solidify therapy techniques in a functional setting with in-the-moment adjustments. During a recent practice, Cora used a personal amplification device to focus on vocal projection and breath management while running drills and giving feedback to her players. Way to go, coach!

MGH Voice Center recently welcomed Avivah Wang, Otolaryngology Resident from Boston Medical Center, to visit and spend some time in our Surgical Lab with our current fellow, Dr. Antonio Bures. Avivah had the opportunity to dissect a larynx and get hands-on experience with the microsurgery equipment.

We are wishing Carol Krusemark all the best as she embarks on her new journey! After 16 amazing years as a voice-specialized Speech Language Pathologist at the MGH Voice Center, Carol’s last day with us was at the end of June. Carol has made a positive impact on the lives of all her patients, and we are grateful for all her hard work, enthusiasm, and support throughout the years. As a Term Lecturer with the MGH Institute of Health Professions, Carol has also been a wonderful role model and teacher to countless students. Thank you for being such an outstanding and important part of our team for so many years!

Carol will be opening her own private practice in Saratoga Springs, NY. She will also be doing some academic teaching with Ithaca College’s new remote SLP Master’s program. We are sad to see her go but are proud of all her accomplishments and wishing her success and happiness on the next phase of her career!

A big congratulations to our graduating fellow, Dr. Samir Ballestas!! 🎉 Thank you for all your hard work and dedication this past year.

Dr. Ballestas will be starting his Laryngeal Surgery practice in Barranquilla, Colombia in the upcoming months. We wish him the best of luck in this next chapter and he will surely be missed!

We were thrilled to have Dr. David Lott, Professor & Chair, Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery/Audiology; Mayo Clinic Arizona, Director, Head and Neck Regenerative Medicine & Transplantation Program, join us for an inspiring and invigorating special guest lecture about his great work with laryngeal transplantation and how to continue innovating voice and airway care.

We were also very fortunate to host Dr. Lott in a roundtable discussion with our own Drs. Steven Zeitels, Tiffiny Hron, Michal Plocienniczak, Bob Hillman and the entire voice research team, focusing on the future of laryngology and how the group envisions the field evolving over time.

Dr. Lott’s visit to the Voice Center was a motivating experience and we were truly delighted to welcome him back as a graduate of the Mass General Laryngeal Surgery Fellowship Program in 2011.

We would like to recognize Emma Willis, Jeremy Wolfberg and Charlie Nudelman for earning the Distinguished Early Career Professionals Certificate from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association

Emma and Jeremy are currently PhD students at the Mass General Institute of Health Professions (IHP) who have research Speech-Language Pathologist positions here at the Voice Center and Charlie is an alum of our Vocal Hyperfunction Clinical Research Center and former IHP MS Student.

The Distinguished Early Career Professional (ECP) Certificate was created to recognize and identify ECPs in the fields of audiology and speech-language pathology who are making an impact in the areas of leadership, volunteering, or advocacy at the local, state, and/or national level. This will also highlight the involvement of ECPs in their local, state, and community speech-language-hearing associations.

It was an honor to have Dr. Zeitels present at MGH Surgical Grand Rounds last Thursday! He discussed Laryngeal Surgery over the last 20 years, covering innovations in treating cancer, stenosis, paralysis, and phonotrauma.
