ELEMENTS OF RELEASE
1. EMBODIMENT. Release primarily belongs to the body, so, a prior phase of release is to gently and gradually initiate and redirect our attention more toward the body. And not only towards sensations that feel uncomfortable but towards the whole spectrum of our bodily experience. Touch your feet, your legs, your hands. Explore various postures and movements. What sensations come up? Of numbness, tension, fear, tightness, strength? Our body can't release what it cannot hold in a sensory way.
2. REGULATION. Our bodies can't release what the nervous system cannot regulate. Underneath our tense, frozen and tight bodies are emotions that have been suppressed for years.
At the same time, living disconnected from our bodies for so long, ignoring and abandoning our bodily experience, taught our nervous system something: how to run away and distract from the bodily discomfort, not regulate it.
Teaching the nervous system to gradually and safely hold and regulate the discomfort associated with uncomfortable, scary and painful sensations is a process.
