I love this talk by Andrea Nichol on Fibromyalgia. She talks about the neurological processes that are visible on MRIs that might be part of the puzzle. She has a great way about her - non-stigmatizing and empathetic

In her keynote address at the inaugural Fibromyalgia Health & Wellbeing Summit (Dublin, 2018) Prof. Andrea Nicol provided historical perspectives on fibromya...

I saw this saying on a sticker when I was a kid, and it's stuck with me ever since. Walking through life looking for the wonderful thing - being aware of wonderful things - naming things as wonderful when they kind of really are wonderful - believing in possibilities, even small ones - faith that things can get better, sometimes slowly, sometimes quickly, sometimes it is built, a product of momentum and hard work. And sometimes it is dumb luck.

Many reasons. One is the speed at which the budge occurred. The body is more likely to sound an alarm for a body change that occurred quickly than a change that occurred slowly.

Come to the support group and learn more about pain and the various factors influencing it.

WHAT in the $ #%& is even PAIN?

The brain constructs a sensible story about all the information it gets from tissues, nerves, the spine, and the vast amount of info already stored inside the brain. It makes a value judgement. The judgement is PAIN. (From Explain Pain).

Like vision and many other senses, the brain drastically interferes with the experience of pain.

Outsmart Your Pain can give some concrete coping skills in moments of intense pain. It can help calm the nervous system and change the negative chatter in the brain that comes during those times of pain. So for example, rather than stew in anger and resentment at the pain, turn to compassion for the body part that is hurting.

ELEMENTS OF RELEASE⁣

1. EMBODIMENT. Release primarily belongs to the body, so, a prior phase of release is to gently and gradually initiate and redirect our attention more toward the body. And not only towards sensations that feel uncomfortable but towards the whole spectrum of our bodily experience. Touch your feet, your legs, your hands. Explore various postures and movements. What sensations come up? Of numbness, tension, fear, tightness, strength? Our body can't release what it cannot hold in a sensory way. ⁣

2. REGULATION. Our bodies can't release what the nervous system cannot regulate. Underneath our tense, frozen and tight bodies are emotions that have been suppressed for years.

At the same time, living disconnected from our bodies for so long, ignoring and abandoning our bodily experience, taught our nervous system something: how to run away and distract from the bodily discomfort, not regulate it. ⁣

Teaching the nervous system to gradually and safely hold and regulate the discomfort associated with uncomfortable, scary and painful sensations is a process.
