Juneteenth recognizes the freedom of enslaved people of African descent in Texas. It occurred nearly two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation for the freedom news to travel to Galveston, TX. The Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, TX, on June 19, 1865.

As of June 17, 2021, Congress approved a new bill recognizing Juneteenth as a national holiday. Interestingly, culinary traditions play a significant role in Juneteenth celebrations. See the full resource at the link in our bio!

Thank you to for this recipe submission!

“It is a Jamaican recipe, Stewed Peas. It is made with red kidney beans and smoked pork neck bones, cooked in coconut milk with herbs and spices. It is served with rice, some steamed vegetables (carrots, cabbage, corn, broccoli), and a side of fried plantains.
This is one of the many comfort foods I had growing up in Jamaica. Stewed peas can be made with pork, beef, chicken, or vegetarian.”

We invite you to share your own African Heritage recipe with us for a chance to win a copy of, “Juke Joints, Jazz Clubs, and Juice: A Cocktail Recipe Book: Cocktails from Two Centuries of African American Cookbooks” by
