WEIRD, but true.

So in the biomechanics world there is a term that you need to know called RELATIVE MOTION. Basically what it means is that since JOINTS are the places in which two bones meet each other, motion can be created in two ways:

1. when the actual joint moves
2. a neighboring bone moves

For our glute to load up (stretch out), the hip has to internally rotate. Traditionally this is identified as the leg's ability to twist inward. I can't think of too many times in the functional world where we would demonstrate this. We do, however, practice RELATIVE internal rotation each and everytime we take a step.

As we go through the pattern of walking and running, we are supposed to allow our pelvis to twist over our leg and create internal rotation. This act of twisting, stretches out the glute and gives our butt the energy to push our bodyweight forward when walking and running.

"DON'T BELIEVE ME?"

Grab a light resistance band and follow the seven steps for the drill in the image. Hold 3-8 reps for 3-8 seconds and you will feel a small fire in your back pocket.

Getting sore after a workout isn't the gold-standard for knowing you had a good workout. DOMS (delayed-onset muscle soreness) typically happens when: you're a new or returning lifter, you're trying new movements, or you've made a sudden, significant increase in load, volume, or intensity. Normal, iterative progressions in your routine will give you great results, but probably won't leave you sore. Don't chase the pain.
