The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) has announced an exciting partnership with The Fenway Institute at Fenway Health to enhance the visibility, availability, and applicability of educational resources designed to improve care for the LGBTQIA+ community.

This initiative will provide engaging trainings for all levels of the health care workforce, equipping providers with the knowledge and skills to deliver culturally appropriate, respectful, and affirming care to LGBTQIA+ patients and service users.

📌 Training topics include:
• Creating inclusive and welcoming environments
• Collecting sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) data
• Primary care for transgender and gender diverse patients
• Affirming care for transgender and gender diverse children and adolescents

📊 New research highlights the strong safety record of Nurse Practitioners!

A national study published in JAANP (June 2025) found that despite the growing number of NPs delivering patient care, the percentage of malpractice claims involving NPs has remained flat over the past decade and remains remarkably low overall.

✅ As the NP role continues to expand, these findings reinforce the high quality and safety of NP-provided care.

☀️ July is UV Safety Awareness Month — A Perfect Time for NPs to Promote Sun Safety!

As Nurse Practitioners, we play a vital role in educating patients about preventing skin cancer and minimizing UV-related skin damage.

Did you know?
👉Most skin cancers are caused by UV exposure—and much of this damage is preventable.
👉Even one blistering sunburn in childhood can double melanoma risk later in life.

💡 July is the perfect opportunity to:
✅ Remind patients during visits about daily sun protection habits
✅ Counsel on proper use of broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen
✅ Encourage regular skin checks and early dermatology referrals

🌞 Quick Patient Education Tips:
• Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before going outdoors; reapply every 2 hours, or after swimming or sweating.
• Wear protective clothing, hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses.
• Seek shade—especially between 10 AM and 4 PM.

Let’s work together to reduce the burden of skin cancer through prevention and early detection!
