Gulf War Illness Research Group

Gulf War Illness Research Group Boston University based group lead by Dr. Kimberly Sullivan dedicated to Gulf War Illness research.

This consortium consists of a team of experts from several disciplines that will provide further understanding to the pathobiology of Gulf War Illness. The consortium believes that Gulf War Illness is not only a multi-symptom illness but also a multi-system illness requiring experts from multiple disciplines from leading academic and government agencies working together to solve. As a team of researchers working together, we believe that we can vastly increase the understanding of the pathobiology of Gulf War Illness and develop targeted treatments for its symptoms through this highly collaborative research consortium. Goal:

The primary goals of the study are to identify biomarkers of Gulf War Illness that can be used in diagnosis and for identifying mechanisms that can be targeted for treatment trials. We are currently recruiting veterans to participant in this research at sites in Boston, Miami and San Francisco.

Gulf War Illness is now officially recognized and validated with its own ICD diagnostic code, which is the medical system doctors use worldwide to recognize and record illnesses. This is a big step forward for veteran care and research efforts, with more progress to come.

Kimberly Sullivan, along with a group of clinical researchers and veterans, advocated for this official recognition, which will support better diagnosis, treatment and understanding of Gulf War illness.

On February 24th, the Institute for Neuro-Immune Medicine will be hosting the 2025 SHIELD Conference! The event will begin at 12:00 pm EST and will take place via Zoom. SHIELD stands for Sustained Homeostatic Imbalance due to Environmental Exposure Linked to Deployment. This conference will provide an update on Gulf War Illness (GWI) research—exploring where we started, where we are now, and how we can "close the loop" to better support affected veterans.

The conference will feature presentations in three key areas: Gut Health Metabolic, Neuroscience (CNS), and Immune/Pain. At the end of each session, there will be a Q&A where attendees can engage with the speakers.

If you're interested in attending, please complete the registration form below.
