Katrina was told her brain AVM was “inoperable” and that she should avoid physical activity for the rest of her life.

After her AVM ruptured during a workout, she found her way to Nirav Patel, MD, neurosurgeon at the Mass General Brigham Neuroscience Institute and founder of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital AVM Program. After carefully reviewing her case, Dr. Patel was confident he could safely remove the AVM and give her the best chance at a cure.

Following weeks of intensive care and a 13-hour open microsurgery, Katrina woke up feeling like herself again. Today, she’s back to running, hiking, paddle boarding, and playing with her kids.

“I feel lucky and optimistic, like I’ve gotten a second chance at life.” 💫

A time to honor the strength of those living with epilepsy, to amplify the voices that often go unheard, and to remind the world that this condition is far more complex than what most people see from the outside.

Epilepsy can mean exhaustion, nausea, confusion, fear, recovery… and moments that happen in silence, when no one is watching.

But it also means resilience, courage, and an incredible community that continues to show up every single day.
1 in 26 people will develop epilepsy in their lifetime.
That number is real. That impact is real. And awareness is how we make a difference.

This month, let’s educate, support, and speak up, because understanding saves lives, and compassion changes them.
Let’s make epilepsy visible. 💜⚡️
