True Confessions of a Type 1 Diabetic

True Confessions of a Type 1 Diabetic A place for those with diabetes learn, connect, engage, and empower. I fell off the wagon. I had become detached from my diabetes. It was empowering.

This page is managed by Phyllis Kaplan, who has lived with T1D since the age of 2 and has been an advocate since she was 13. The idea of this page came to me after a recent appointment I had with my diabetes educator. I sat there in confessional with no meter readings, no data, nothing. I was blatantly honest to a diabetes medical professional. It was just what I needed.

On my drive into work this morning, the morning show I listened to, Mix 104.1 asked "what have you left the house without" since one of the co-hosts left without their shoes.

My answer (yep, I called in!) was: My insulin pump. I've actually done this 2x over the 24 years I've worn one for my type 1 diabetes. The first time I made it all the way into work, which was an hour on the commuter rail, got there and realized it. I didn't have any backup supplies that day. Fortunately a co-worker had driven in that day and graciously drove me home then back to work. The alternatives: go to the ER, take a cab/Uber home.

The other time this happened was to go to a sample sale in Boston. A friend of a friend picked me up and we got on the Mass Pike when I realized what happened. We weren't far from my home, but the sample sale!! :)

I make light of this, and it could have been more serious, but life with T1D has taught me to be creative, advocate for myself, and think several steps ahead at all time.

🎉On April 24, 2024 my type 1 diabetes turns 50 years old.

Living with T1D has been a journey filled with ups and downs, but I'm grateful for every moment. Here's why you might care about my story:

1️⃣ Inspiration: For anyone facing health challenges, I hope my journey offers inspiration and shows that resilience is possible, no matter the obstacles.

2️⃣ Education: Let's raise awareness about T1D together! By sharing my experience, we can spread knowledge and understanding about this condition and its impact on daily life.

3️⃣ Connection: Whether you're a fellow T1D warrior, a friend supporting someone with diabetes, or simply curious, let's connect and share stories. We're stronger together.

Thank you for being a part of my journey!

I'm fundraising for JDRF because I believe in their vision of a world without type 1 diabetes (T1D). Learn more about what I'm doing and how you can help!
