MGH Center for Women's Mental Health We invite you to visit our website at www.womensmentalhealth.org

The Ammon-Pinizzotto Center for Women’s Mental Health at MGH was established in 1989 and has been renamed following the generous gift from Carol Ammon and Dr. Marie Pinizzotto. Our website (www.womensmentalhealth.org) provides a range of current information including discussion of new research findings in women’s mental health and how such investigations inform day-to-day clinical practice. Despite the growing number of studies being conducted in women’s health, the clinical implications of such work are frequently controversial, leaving patients with questions regarding the most appropriate path to follow. Providing these resources to patients and their doctors so that individual clinical decisions can be made in a thoughtful and collaborative fashion dovetails with the mission of our Center.

We know that postpartum depression and anxiety can recur, which is why planning ahead matters. Our Associate Director, Dr. Marlene Freeman, shares how collaborating with loved ones and healthcare providers before birth can reduce the risk of another episode.

🎤“We can grasp the opportunity to meet with the patient and a partner or other loved one to talk about how to plan for the postpartum ahead. … because, you know, as you know, it's impossible to really navigate the system and find a new therapist in the postpartum when you're so overwhelmed.” — Dr. Marlene Freeman

Today on , we recognize the importance of supporting mental health across all life stages.

At the MGH Center for Women’s Mental Health, we focus on perinatal and reproductive mental health across the lifespan — from pregnancy and postpartum to menopause and beyond. Through research, clinical care, and education, we aim to empower all providers and patients with the support and information they deserve.

Throwback to our fourth episode of So Glad You Asked, when Dr. Ruta joins Kara to unpack the multiple layers of trauma that can follow a difficult birth and how they can impact postpartum recovery and family planning.

🔊"You already were having anxiety during the pregnancy, there was the pandemic, there was the complications during birth, then there was caring for a child who was in the NICU, so there's just all these multiple layers." — Dr. Ruta Nonacs

For many postpartum moms, especially those new to the medical system, trauma often coincides with other perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. Luckily, there are ways through it.

Grief and depression often show up together — but they aren't the same and may need different support. In this episode of So Glad You Asked, Dr. Ruta Nonacs explains how untreated depression can make grieving even harder, and debunks the myth that medication gets in the way of healing.

🗣 “I think some people are afraid that if they’re depressed, the medication will inhibit them from grieving. But I think what it does help with is getting rid of the depression component and making the grief less pervasive.” — Dr. Ruta Nonacs

🎧 Tune in wherever you get your podcasts to hear how Sarah and Allie navigated grief during the postpartum period.
