MGH Center for Women's Mental Health We invite you to visit our website at www.womensmentalhealth.org

The Ammon-Pinizzotto Center for Women’s Mental Health at MGH was established in 1989 and has been renamed following the generous gift from Carol Ammon and Dr. Marie Pinizzotto. Our website (www.womensmentalhealth.org) provides a range of current information including discussion of new research findings in women’s mental health and how such investigations inform day-to-day clinical practice. Despit

e the growing number of studies being conducted in women’s health, the clinical implications of such work are frequently controversial, leaving patients with questions regarding the most appropriate path to follow. Providing these resources to patients and their doctors so that individual clinical decisions can be made in a thoughtful and collaborative fashion dovetails with the mission of our Center.

In July 2025, Dr. Ruta Nonacs explored new insights on treating postpartum depression with co-occurring anxiety—a condition that affects between 20% and 34% of mothers. She highlights research showing that SSRIs, SNRIs, benzodiazepines, and zuranolone can ease both depression and anxiety symptoms. Early screening and tailored treatment can make a real difference. In July 2025, Dr. Ruta Nonacs highlighted research from Mass General Hospital showing how AI and electronic health record data can help predict postpartum depression risk—even before symptoms appear. This machine learning model is especially valuable for identifying risk in women without a prior psychiatric history, a group typically seen as low risk. Early identification means better support and care. What are intrusive thoughts? Why do I have them? And is it okay to talk to my provider about them?

In last week's episode of So Glad You Asked, Allie opens up about her experience with intrusive thoughts in the postpartum period — and Dr. Ruta is here to break it all down.

“When you have postpartum depression, those thoughts are like Velcro. You can’t get it out of your head. They're just stuck and they keep coming back.” — Dr. Ruta Nonacs

This episode dives into why these thoughts happen, what they mean (and don’t mean), and how to start a conversation with someone who can help. You are not alone.
