Jacob is unstoppable! At 13, extreme foot pain forced him off the basketball court. Flexible flatfoot PLUS extra bone in both feet made running, pivoting, and jumping excruciating. That’s when he and his family met orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Susan Mahan. Now 17, Jacob says the surgery transformed him as an athlete and a person. “I used to be the slowest guy on the court. Now it’s up to me how strong, how athletic I want to be.” Read about Jacob's journey: https://on.bchil.org/4gB91tE

Brachial plexus birth injury is probably the most common birth injury parents have never heard of. In about one in 1,000 births, nerves running through the neck, through the shoulder, and down the arm get injured, causing weakness or paralysis in the arm. Most babies recover over time, but about 30 percent have injuries severe enough to cause long-term problems. Dr. Andrea Bauer and other researchers have found a better way to diagnose BPBI so parents will know sooner if their baby may need surgery. Some research leads to surprising results. For Brachial Plexus Injury Awareness Week, we’re proud to share this example:

When family after family chose not to participate in a study of brachial plexus birth injury, researchers asked the Office of Health Equity and Inclusion for help. Together, they made changes that helped build parents’ trust. And though the researchers had set out to increase the diversity of children in the study, they were delighted to see more families of all races sign up.

“When we changed our recruitment methods, we found more subjects from every subset of our patient population willing to enroll,” says brachial plexus expert and orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Andrea Bauer: https://on.bchil.org/3UiZRtH
