earch has documented the beneficial effect of NIDCAP in terms of shorter intensive care and overall hospital stay, better weight gain and improved behavioral outcomes that endure beyond infancy. Studies have also documented that the NIDCAP approach enhances brain structure and function when measured by sophisticated medical techniques such as EEG and MRI. Challenge and Opportunity

The incidence of preterm birth, worldwide, is rapidly increasing. In the US, the incidence of prematurity currently stands at 12.7%. Over 25% of all preterm infants are also born too small for their gestational age. These infants present immediate and significant challenges to their parents and to their caregivers in Newborn Intensive Care Units. They are hypersensitive, difficult to feed, and difficult to calm. More than 50% will go on to develop learning and emotional disabilities, requiring special education and mental health services. The challenge is even greater in developing countries.

We are commemorating the life of Kathleen VandenBerg, PhD, an early and profoundly influential pioneer of NIDCAP.

Kathy passed away last week.

Throughout her career, Kathy became a NIDCAP Master Trainer, served as the Director of the third NIDCAP Training Center, conducted important research, and was a founding member of the original NFI Board of Directors.

Kathy and her work were highlighted in our inaugural Developmental Observer issue in 2007. In this article, Dorothy Vittner captured this essence of Kathy: Interwoven throughout Kathy’s incredible journey has been her sense of wonder and respect for the courage and strength shown by the infants and families within the environment of the NICU.

In so many ways, Kathy has left a legacy that will inspire hospital care for infants and families for generations to come.
Our NIDCAP community is deeply grateful for her significant contributions in helping to establish the foundation of our work, as well for her enduring friendship.

🌍 NIDCAP Federation International

✨ Mission
To improve the future for all infants in hospitals and their families through individualized, developmental, family-centered, research-based NIDCAP* care —
by providing and assuring the quality of NIDCAP education, training, and certification for professionals and hospital systems.

🗣️ The international voice of the newborn

🌟 Vision
A global society in which all hospitalized infants and their families receive care in the evidence-based NIDCAP* model.

🔹 The NIDCAP Model (Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program):

• Infants are seen as individuals, persons, and collaborators in care — supported and nurtured by their parents to promote healthy development, well-being, and full potential.
• Families are key nurturers, advocates, and primary caregivers, as well as care decision partners.
• Infants, families, and professionals are integral partners in the health care team.
• Hospital environments and culture support infant-family relationships and promote individualized strengths, growth, and development.
• The NFI provides the framework for NIDCAP care with educational resources, formal training, and mentoring for professionals and families.
