The most successful mode of recovery whether the struggle is with opioids, alcohol, food, s*x, anger or codependency, (It doesn't stop there), is through Cognitive Behavior Therapy.
Within the 12 Step process, the 4th step is based on CBT.
Other fellowships and treatment options base their healing upon it.
The 12 step fellowships incorporate spirituality in their process.
Spirituality can be found within religious beliefs or within our rational thinking.
The first step stated that we are powerless and our lives have become unmanageable.
But within the 4th step, we learn the root cause of our malady, to recognize it, how it manifests in our lives, and what are we going to do differently.
Until we do that, we have no control because we don't even know the how and why we act the we do. Now we have learned that.
In reference to spirituality, as stated above, people often resort to their religion.
I say that religion although helpful to many, is not the only path to spirituality.
We all have the means within us to become very spiritual people. The heart, mind and soul are very powerful. We just need to learn to nurture it. Then we become independent and self reliant.
There are many tools that lead us there.
Referring back to the 4th step, we change our thinking that creates negative emotions and actions.
Therein lies our peace. It is a wonderful beginning.
This is a very broad statement. There are many details to consider.
But in my experiences in my own life and in a career based on helping others heal, trial and error, I have found a true method of recovery, based upon the actions of many who have gone before me. And as others have done, I add my own beliefs.
Life is ever hanging.
Peace and love.
