Governor Healey signed the Massachusetts Parentage Act that expands parental rights, including for LGBTQIA+ parents. Fenway Health and other organizations advocated for the bill, which updates guidelines for courts and families to make it easier for someone to legally qualify as a parent by addressing various ways that someone can become one, including through birth, adoption, marriage, surrogacy, and assisted reproduction, such as in-vitro fertilization.

The Fenway Institute released a policy brief outlining the dangers to equality and public health posed by the policies in the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 Presidential Transition Project, and urging Americans to make sure they understand the potential impact to health care quality, equity, and access if the policies are implemented.

“Project 2025 articulates a dystopian agenda that would radically weaken the nation’s public health infrastructure, further restrict access to reproductive health care, and criminalize efforts to support LGBTQIA+ youth.”

Urge the MA Legislature to Pass Substance Use Legislation with OPCs! The state is facing an ongoing opioid crisis, with 6 people dying every day from overdose. In 2023 alone, we lost 2,105 lives to overdoses, and 2024 is already showing alarming numbers with 504 confirmed and estimated deaths. Overdose Prevention Centers (OPCs) are a proven, evidence-based solution that can save lives, reduce harm, and connect individuals to essential healthcare and treatment services, and a key tool to address the opioid epidemic. Help make OPCs a reality in MA!

Take action to thank Representatives who voted for the Massachusetts Parentage Act (H.4672) and urge your Senator to do the same!

There are many paths to parenthood and many types of families in our state, but Massachusetts statutes have not kept pace with modern science and the diversity of our families, leaving children vulnerable. This Act will update outdated parentage law so that it is clear, equitable, and provides legal protection for all families, including LGBTQ+ families and families built through assisted reproduction. https://buff.ly/3xXwCof

Did you know that nationwide, approximately 1.2 million people are currently living with HIV and 13% of them are unaware of their status? The American College of Preventive Medicine reminds us that HIV prevention is everyone’s business. Physicians and health care systems must embed HIV care into existing primary care delivery models, making HIV preventive care and treatment routinized and normalized.https://buff.ly/3Y82Qrt

"Given how well resourced anti-trans political groups are, it can really distort the public discourse and make it harder to advance evidence-based, clinically sound practices." - Alex Keuroghlian, MD, MPH, Director of Fenway Health's Division of Education and Training speaking to LA Times for their story on LGBTQ+ healthcare workers fight for gender-affirming care amid the rise in anti-trans laws.

The fate of trans healthcare lies in the outcome of a presidential election and next summer's Supreme Court ruling. But these LGBTQ+ healthcare workers are determined to provide gender-affirming care.
