Today is National Doctors’ Day, a time to celebrate physicians like Daniel Lee, MD, director of Pediatric Otology and Neurotology at Mass Eye and Ear, who made it possible for Celine to hear again when she was just nine months old.

“Please consider supporting these incredible physicians, whose expertise and compassion impact patients from around the world,” says Celine’s mom.

The groundbreaking work of Ula Jurkunas, MD, associate director of the Cornea Service, continues to bring hope to people blinded by serious eye injuries.

Several patients at Mass Eye and Ear have shared inspiring stories from experimental trials to repair damaged corneas, including Phil Durst.

In 2017, Phil was hit in the face with commercial detergent after a hose detached from an industrial dishwasher, leaving him blind and in constant pain. He later enrolled in a clinical trial using stem cell transplants to repair his cornea.

At his 18-month follow-up, the treatment had fully restored his cornea and significantly improved his vision. Today, his pain is gone, and he can once again make out everyday details, from a can in his car door to buildings across a parking lot.

As Phil shared in a recent National Geographic feature: “It’s a work of art.”

Brad Ellis has been part of the Team Eye and Ear family for seven years, and the 2026 Boston Marathon will be his eighth marathon with our team.

“Running for Team Eye and Ear has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life,” Brad says. He runs in honor of his son, Jake, who has Usher Syndrome Type 2A—a rare genetic condition that causes retinitis pigmentosa and bilateral hearing loss.

Today, Jake is pursuing his degree in the Undergraduate Nursing Program at the University of Iowa, continuing his passion and commitment to helping others.

“It is an honor to once again proudly wear the Team Eye and Ear jersey and raise funds and awareness for the Usher community.”

Stay tuned for the next profile in our Team Eye and Ear series as we continue celebrating the people who make this program extraordinary.

New research from Mass Eye and Ear and Harvard Medical School shows that many genetic mutations once thought to guarantee inherited eye disease actually lead to vision problems in less than 30% of people who carry them. These findings could transform how we diagnose and treat inherited retinal diseases.

Study finds only fraction of those with mutated gene develop malady — a finding that could lead to better treatments (and could apply to other such illnesses)

All the snow yesterday had us reflecting on the Blizzard of ’78, a moment remembered not just for the storm itself, but for how people showed up for one another. Many nurses worked double shifts for days straight, and physicians pitched in wherever help was needed, even making patients’ beds. When the power went out, roles didn’t matter; the whole hospital came together to keep the patients fed. Thank you to everyone, then and now, for helping us keep our hospital running!

Congratulations to Sally Reiley, who has run more marathons with Mass Eye and Ear and raised more philanthropic support than any other runner in our 20-year history!

That’s 12 marathons and more than $350,000 raised—an incredible achievement. Thank you, Sally, for your dedication and impact.

We can’t wait to cheer her on again this year as she runs her 13th Boston Marathon with Team Eye and Ear.

Stay tuned for the next profile in our Team Eye and Ear series as we continue celebrating the people who make this program extraordinary.
