March is Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month! 💚

At SMILe Lab, we are dedicated to research focused on improving communication for individuals with Cerebral Palsy (CP). This month, we’re sharing key facts, current research, and valuable resources to raise awareness and foster understanding of CP.

Cerebral Palsy is the most common childhood motor disability, affecting movement, posture, and coordination in different ways. While there is no cure, advancements in research, therapy, and biotechnology continue to expand opportunities to thos with CP.

Join us in our continued advocacy in recognizing the strength of the CP community! Stay tuned for more! 💚✨

Happy ! 💚 We’re excited to recognize this day that aims to bring together people with CP, their families, and organizations and ensure those with CP have equitable rights, access, and opportunities. We are honored to work with children who have CP and are excited to continue our research that investigates how communication can be improved for those with CP and dysarthria! For those in the Boston area, we also wanted to highlight some CP resources. Find the link in the comments of this post!

There are 2 days until 💚 Today, we would like to highlight a concept called speech intelligibility, a measure we use in our studies to determine how well a listener can understand what a speaker is saying 🗣️Swipe to learn more about how this measure is used in cerebral palsy research!

Welcome to SMILe!

The SMILe Lab is dedicated to the study of motor speech disorders in children. We combine behavioral approaches, analysis of speech signals, and 3D face-tracking technology to understand how children’s speech is affected by motor speech disorders and to develop tools and techniques to better assess and treat these disorders.

The primary objectives of our research are:

  • To improve assessment and early identification of dysarthria (i.e., a disorder affecting control of the muscle movements for speech) in children with neurodevelopmental disabilities.

  • To develop more effective treatment methods for improving speech intelligibility and communication function in children with motor speech disorders.
