BIG NEWS! The Esplanade Association is a part of the 2026 Boston Athletic Association’s Bank of America Boston Marathon® Official Charity Program for the 130th Boston Marathon presented by Bank of America.

This means you can make every mile count by running for the park you love. Funds raised will directly support the Esplanade’s care, community programs, and future improvements—so the over 4 million visitors each year can continue to enjoy Boston’s most iconic riverfront park. 💙🌳

Tuesday, August 19, will live in our hearts fondly for many, many years to come. Four-time Super Bowl champion Rob Gronkowski officially unveiled the new Gronk Playground! Designed as a state-of-the-art, inclusive, and accessible space, this playground invites all kids to play, imagine, and move together.

The celebration was pure Boston energy: Gronk’s duck boat entrance, kids racing across a “Boston Marathon” finish line, and even the Governor pushing Gronk down the slide. Youth and families from the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Hill House brought the playground to life: running, climbing, and laughing as they enjoyed this new Esplanade destination.

This day and playground could not have been possible without the Gronk Nation Youth Foundation and our partners at the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation and CharityTeams (specifically Susan Hurley and everything she does!). Special thank you to DCR Commissioner LaChapelle and Governor Healey for joining us on the day!

Rob Gronkowski, along with his family, friends, and team, made this playground a reality. This is more than a tribute to a hometown legend—it’s a gift of play, teamwork, and imagination for generations to come.

Visit esplanade.org/gronk to learn more about this new, exciting playground!

Centennial Fountain will be turned off due to the MA Dept. of Public Health's (DPH) recent cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) advisory that was posted in the Charles River downstream of Massachusetts Ave. To decrease the spread of algae, the fountain will be shut off until public health officials tell us the area is clear of bacteria.

For more information, please visit the MA DPH's algae bloom webpage (mass.gov/lists/algae-information), and you can learn more about Charles River water quality alerts from our friends at the Charles River Watershed Association's flagging program page (crwa.org/flagging-program).

This Disability Pride Month, the Esplanade Association has taken steps in our commitment of accessibility and inclusivity for all Charles River Esplanade visitors. We are excited to announce Brenda Hernandez's role, EA's current Project Coordinator, now includes being the liaison for ADA-Accessibility related inquiries. While not a stand-alone position, we agreed it was an essential step in our efforts to increase accessibility efforts in the park.

As we strive to develop more inclusive programs, events, and spaces in the park and at the new Charlesbank campus, we partnered with Think Outside the Vox to train our staff on ways to create inclusive environments both externally for park users and internally for team members. We are so grateful to the folks at Vox for educating our team on ways to implement meaningful and helpful change for our organization to make the Charles River Esplanade a welcoming space for all.

Accessibility for individuals of all abilities has been at the forefront of development for Charlesbank, the new universally accessible campus set to open in 2026. Learn more about our park's accessibility on our Know Before You Go at esplanade.org/know-before-you-go/ and about Charlesbank’s amenities at esplanade.org/charlesbank/
