MINDlink Foundation Connecting the Cerebellum to Cures This is in an attempt to start connecting people together who are looking for support in dealing with these diseases.

Here at MINDlink, we are interested in ground-breaking research at the Laboratory for Neuroanatomy and Cerebellar Neurobiology at Massachusetts General Hospital to find a cure for the more than six million Americans who suffer from neurodegenerative diseases such as ataxia, Alzheimer's, autism, depression and schizophrenia, epilepsy, Huntington's, and Parkinson's. Novel treatments must be discover

ed before more people are affected by these diseases and the overwhelming cost of these diseases- now billions of dollars- cripples our health care system. We also want to hear your stories about your experiences with neurodegenerative disease that have either effected you or someone you know! Hopefully, these stories will start getting people to take notice in the severity of these diseases! With some advocacy and community we CAN connect the cerebellum to cures!

Thank you so much to all our supporters who helped make this year’s Falmouth Road Race such a success. It was a beautiful day for the race, with pristine weather, enthusiastic, although smaller, crowds, and wonderful spirit of our dedicated group of runners on the course and other team members who completed the distance in the At-Home edition. Hopefully next year, COVID will be a distant memory, and our entire team will be able to run in person!
Your support and encouragement to run in the race, and to keep the faith in the work that we do, makes a difference. It allows us to continue our work in the MGH Ataxia Center & Schmahmann Lab, and demonstrates that we are in this fight together against these challenging neurological diseases.
We are making great strides in understanding and treating and related disorders, and with your help we will continue this battle to develop improved treatments and find new cures.
If you have not yet had a chance to support the work and would like to do so, here is the link: because.massgeneral.org/MINDlink2021

This is the 11th year that the MINDlink Foundation is running the Falmouth Road Race to raise funds in support of the Massachusetts General Hospital Ataxia Center and the Schmahmann Laboratory for Neuroanatomy and Cerebellar Neurobiology. Dr. Schmahmann, the Founding Director of the MGH Ataxia Center is working together with his team of colleagues across multiple disciplines in their pursuit of providing care and answers for those who are afflicted with ataxia, and other neurological disorders.

There are many types of cerebellar ataxia that produce atrophy of the cerebellum (the little brain). The most common physical symptoms are ataxia – lack of coordination and stability, as well as difficulty with speech, eye movements, and swallowing. Additionally, there can be complications associated with cognition and emotion in folks afflicted with ataxia, and Dr. Schmahmann is the world’s leading expert in pioneering the link between the cerebellum and these nonphysical symptoms.

The clinics of the MGH Ataxia Center provide the many needed medical services to thousands of ataxia patients worldwide, and Dr. Schmahmann and his team are in the final stages of a Phase III clinical trial examining the effectiveness of the drug Troriluzole that may help suppress the progression of symptoms in patients with spinocerebellar ataxia. If the Phase III trial is successful, the drug may be approved by the FDA for use under a physician’s care. The Schmahmann Lab is also a leading clinical trial site for a drug called Verdiperstat, in the hope of improving another challenging ataxia – multiple system atrophy of the cerebellar type. This is very exciting and promising research as there finally may be a way to slow disease progression which is unrelenting unless it is treated. Most recently, the MGH Ataxia Center was tapped by Biogen to be a lead site for the first gene-related therapy using an antisense oligonucleotide (A*O) for the treatment, and hopefully prevention of disease in spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (Machado Joseph disease). Please join us in support of all these efforts of the Schmahmann Lab that will help make a difference in the lives of patients with ataxia and other disorders linked to the cerebellum.

This year’s race will be held both in person in Falmouth on Sunday, August 15th 2021, as well as virtually. If you would like to donate, please visit The MINDlink Team website. Giving is tax-deductible, simple, and secure. Checks can also be made out to MGH, and “MINDlink/Schmahmann Lab” should be written on the memo line.

Thank you for any help you may be able to provide.

The MINDlink team of MGH Ataxia Center and Schmahmann Lab supporters.

We are heartbroken to share the very sad news that we lost our beloved mentor, teacher and colleague today - the great anatomist, Professor Deepak N. Pandya. He was a gentleman and a scholar, modest, caring, thoughtful, and gentle. His pioneering work informed how we conceptualize cortical anatomy, connections, evolution and function. He had an enormous influence on generations of students and colleagues. We will miss him greatly. RIP, dear friend.

Are you and your family interested in helping children with cognitive deficits? We are seeking healthy children ages 3-17 for a short paper and pencil test over a Zoom call! You can check out the link below for more information about the study and contact our coordinator, Colin, about scheduling a visit.

Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital are seeking healthy children younger than 18 years of age to participate in a study to develop a brief paper and pencil test for attention, memory, and language skills.

We are looking for patients with diagnosed neurological conditions to complete a 25-minute test to determine whether a new scale can distinguish between patients with cerebellar disorders and those with other neurological conditions.

Our coordinators will be administering the exam over a Zoom video call to keep with the social distancing rules currently in place.

Interested? Head to the following website for more info and contact our study team!

We are looking to determine whether our new scale for detecting Cerebellar Cognitive and Affective Syndrome (CCAS) distinguish between patients with cerebellar disorders and those with other neurodegenerative conditions.

“The field of cerebellar neurology is blossoming. There’s an unmet need, and an underserved patient population. We now have new interventions, and while we’ve been at this for a long time, I am more enthusiastic than I’ve ever been. It’s a very exciting time.”

The new Ataxia Center at Massachusetts General Hospital seeks to provide comprehensive, personalized and patient-centered care for those with ataxia.

Exciting symposium today on cerebellum in mental health at
Society for Neuroscience organized by the National Institute of Mental Health and their Director, Joshua A. Gordon. Dr. Schmahmann is presenting with colleagues who have all helped move this field forward.

Dr. Schmahmann had a great opportunity to present via videoconference to National Ataxia Foundation board of directors. Wonderful questions and discussion followed. We're working towards a pharmaceutical pre-competitive consortium, which is a critical next step in driving natural history and biomarker studies in .

Relationship between SCA1 and Alzheimer’s disease! The cerebellum link extends far and wide. Congratulations to Jaehong Suh and this extraordinary group. It was stimulating to play a small role in it! MGH Neurology

A gene that can become mutated and cause a rare balance disorder also regulates the behavior of an enzyme that increases the risk for Alzheimer’s disease, according to a new study by Harvard Medical School researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital published Aug. 22 in Cell.
