A smartphone app helped reduce college student drinking—mainly by correcting misperceptions about peer behavior in the three-fourths of students who overestimate their peers’ drinking. For them, shifting these perceptions explained up to 19% of the reduction in alcohol use over 6 months. In contrast, health risk messages did not explain the intervention’s impact.
